um...part two

162 games
0 errors
1445 innings
234 total chances

yes, that is about one and a half chances per game. or, three balls to an outfielder (the lion's share here is right field) every two games. they're dying from simulated boredom out there.

what is the subtext? ah, we need an opiton to play with another infielder. one of them can turn around and chase those three balls down.

suprisingly enough though, this number is not a whole lot lower than right fielders see in a standard code. somewhat less. this one saw 273 in 1358 innings last season.

i guess it is no wonder right fielders are mvp material. they have plenty of time to work the voters.

They probably get in some extra batting practice time too. Get the bullpen guys to throw some BP while they're standing around waiting.

(We'd need ground ball/line drive/fly ball info to really analyze though. Clearly there are base hits to the OF that are handled by the fielders, but do not show up in the number of total chances.)

they must. look at the total chances and look at the putouts? isn't the difference the hits?

(if they aren't the hits what are they?)

((but surely, they must be something else. surely there were more hits than that to right field. what are they darens?))

Total chances are always putouts + assists + errors, outfielders don't get a "chance" for fielding the basehit cleanly and then throwing it back in, only if they mess up and create an error is a "chance" recorded.

MLB averages about 7 OF chances per game .

(((maybe they are minus plays? outs turned into hits-but not errors of course- by marginal defense? that would make sense i guess. the actual regular hits are probably not shown, i don't think the log shows a location on every non home run regular hit.)))
