After our leagues first SB my salaries (53 man roster) went up over 14,000. Is it normal for salaries to shoot up this much? holy cow!

it happens, especially if you have a really young team. the salary cap rarely comes into play though. I've seen very, very few well-managed teams need to consistently trim salary.
