What the hell?

January 05, 2009 at 04:36PM View BBCode

What the hell? I have started off 6-15 when there's teams with half the hitting I have doing just the opposite with 15-6 records. Boston has no more talent than anyone else and they have the best record in the league. There's absolutely no logic to this game. I might as well throw the rest of the season if I'm just going to keep getting screwed over for no particular reason, at least that way I could get a high draft pick out of this ridiculous farce.

I'd say Boston's bullpen is better, except for [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062879]this joke.[/url] That guy should have a 12+ ERA.

20-something games is also not an indication of how the season will go.

I bet, especially with my young developing bullpen, I end up losing at least 85 games. If I don't, I'll be either extremely lucky or had made one hell of a trade before August 1.

I think Casey Stengel said something like this, " In baseball you are going win 60 games and lose 60 games, it what you do with the other 40 that are important"
It should work out for you, besides you still get to play KC a few more times!

Bullpens don't matter [i]that[/i] much in this game. Most veterans will tell you that. Certainly not to the tune of that many more wins compared to some teams of equal talent otherwise.

Twenty games are enough when you've seen it happen a bunch of times over several leagues. I especially like the latest loss where a B/B+ pitcher out-performed my B+/A+ pitcher. What's the point in drafting and developing guys like that when they get treated like waiver wire trash?

I wasn't saying that your bullpen was a problem, I just think Boston is better than what you gave the franchise credit for. I don't know what your settings are, but if you pull pitchers as soon as they get tired, bullpen's do count for something in this game.

I don't know what the deal is with your team...your starters are all solid, nobody in your starting lineup is in a decline because of age or anything except for Amaro (who I would switch with Dietzel to maximize his offseason improvement chances...but that's just me)

I can't really put my finger on why your team is starting off so poorly. Maybe it's because the playing field is starting to level out a little bit as players develop? I'm sure you remember the first couple years of the league where Chicago (AL), Detroit and Pittsburgh had a crazy amount of wins because they had some pretty great initial drafts...

Or maybe ABE just hates you :puzzled:

You touched on one of the reasons why my team should be doing better. As newer leagues go we have sort of a weak one. Usually there are more dominant teams because the carryover from the inital draft should still be in effect. But in this league overall(especially in the A.L.) our teams don't really have killer rosters.

Also you pointed out that the playing field has been leveled. Yeah, exactly. That should mean my team being in the mix instead of in the cellar. After all, my team ended up third in the division last year and didn't really suffer too much in the way of decline or retirement. If you compare rosters my team has just as much talent as anyone else's, more in some cases. Kansas City would be a prime example. That's a team with almost no batting and yet it has a better record than my team so far. It doesn't make any sense.

You're the only team I've won a series against in I don't know how long. First series today I'm right back to losing, and versus the only team with a record worse than mine in the A.L., because this stupid thing won't allow me to score runs. It's amazing how many pitchers turn into superstars against me. It's like throwing money down the toilet to play this joke.

I took a look at the Gangsters' lineup, and here are some of the reasons why I think they are struggling:

1. The Gangsters have a terrible defense, so they are probably giving up a lot of free runs. This is also a problem because it causes their starters to face more batters, so they tire more quickly.

2. The Gangsters' starters have very low endurance. Their pitchers are forced to pitch more because of the bad defense, and they don't really have the endurance to do it. This means their relievers pitch more, and since it is nearly impossible to get ABE to use relievers correctly this results in more runs allowed.

3. The Gangsters' hitters have very low health, and their backups are not very good.

4. The Gangsters' hitters are slow, and they steal too much. Currently, the Gangsters are 10 for 21 stealing bases. The general consensus is that if your stolen base percentage is less than 75%, then stealing is hurting your team. Also, slow runners don't advance extra bases on hits, so it takes more hits to create runs. The Gangsters are near the bottom of the league in runs scored (Da Wreckin' Raiders have this same problem and it is killing them).

It is easy for a manager to overlook these problems, if he or she only focuses on things like Con, Vel, and PvR when evaluating his or her team.

I would argue the health thing. One of your best hitters, [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062272]Marcus Dey[/url] has D- health and can't play in more than 130 games a year. Plus, he is more prone to get hurt. So he'll probably average 120 games a season a the end of his career. You take that bat out of your lineup for 30+ games and replace it with a guy like [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062323]Ken Baker[/url], it does make a difference.

More examples on your team are [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062442]Eddy Jensen[/url], who has C- health and will average around 135 games a year along with [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062483]Joe Filbert[/url] (D+ health) and [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062368]Kory Waters[/url], who even at C+ health, will still miss around 20 games a season if he stays healthy. Anymore than 20 games a season, IMO, is a lot of games.

I would agree with you that pitcher endurance doesn't really matter much if you have your setting right as to when to pull them. For example, I placed [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5513467]Hildebrand[/url] in my rotation even though he has C endurance and he's doing just fine (knock on wood). If I couldn't put him there, I'd have no where else to use him effectively, especially with the pitchers still to come from my minors.

Lastly, I would take another look at your stealing settings. In the first game of our series (game 40), [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062469]Westphal[/url] attempted to steal twice with his 'C' speed against my catcher who has a 'B' arm. In the previous game against Baltimore (game #39) Westphal and Jenson (B- speed) were both caught stealing against [url=http://simdynasty.com/player.jsp?id=5062316]Slade[/url], who has an A+ arm. Unless my guy has A+ speed, he shouldn't be running against that arm. You may have scored more in the 5th inning and more than 2 runs in the sixth if they had not attempted to steal against that rocket arm of a catcher.

I just think the game is more consistant than what you think it is. Sometimes good teams have bad seasons, such is life. The best team doesn't always win the World Series. It's just the way it is...

If you have played this game long enough you realize that defense doesn't make a lot of difference, kind of like bullpens. It really should make more of a difference but it doesn't. That's another thing I think most veterans would tell you. I actually made a team built around more complete players, and in the cases where I wasn't going to be able to draft the better hitter I went for defense. I thought I was pretty savvy for doing so but that team turned out to be very mediocre. It's all about the hitting and pitching in this game. Forget the nuances that should make a difference but don't(base running, defense, bullpens, etc.)

Low health won't have that much effect either because the lower health guys don't miss THAT many more games than the other players. The games they're in it should make NO difference of course.

I don't think the pitcher endurance has an effect in the way you're saying. The pitchers go as long as they can, I don't think the game lets them 'hang around' longer than they were designed to no matter what the circumstances. It mostly depends on your fatigue settings and when you have it bring in relief pitchers.

My hitters are on the slow side but here's where some of the veterans tend to get it wrong. Like the things mentioned above I have found that speed isn't THAT big a deal either. One of the reasons being that the base-running in this game sucks. Guys don't score from second with good speed on singles near as much as they should, or don't advance as much in general. I have had 'A' speed guys hold up on third way more often than they should in such circumstances. Higher speed guys don't insure more runs.

I also have my base stealing set to around average. It might be a little high for the speed of my team but since this thing won't allow most of my hitters to hit it's not like I'm going to be scoring more runs by holding them back, they will just get stranded on base more because nobody knocks them home.

All the teams in this league have weak areas. If this was another league with the usual smattering of powerhouse teams filled with A/A players then I would understand my team's performance better. But if you compare all the teams just in the A.L. you should see that there really isn't a dominant team. Boston shouldn't be as good as it has been based on it's roster and my team shouldn't be as bad. It makes me think that the game doesn't care that much about skill ratings and instead runs things according to some predetermined scheme where some teams do better than other ones because those are the teams that the game randomly decided to give success to in a given season.

I'm down here now. I added a paragraph and reposted, sorry about that. I didn't figure there was that much of a chance that somebody would respond while I was editing.

I totally disagree about any consistency in the game, unless you want to claim that it's consistently illogical.

I'm not sure about the math on the missed games. Those figures seem a little high.

It seems like the people evaluating are looking at things in a vacuum. I keep saying that compared to the rest of the teams I'm right there. Kansas City should be dead last based on his roster. KC doesn't have great overall health and almost NO hitting. Three guys with one 'A' in contact or power on the right side. Not three A/A guys, three guys with an 'A' in one thing or the other. They don't even have the pitching to make up for the hitting. Cleveland has an above .500 record and he has mostly all 'C' health players and average backups at best. Detroit even has a better record than me at this point with mostly 'C' health players and even a couple 'D+'s. It's all relative, that's my point. Compared to the competition I have just as good a team as anyone else in the A.L., so I should be right there with everyone else instead of almost last.

You are right...I'm over .500 and have admitted that I should lose at least 85 games this season. If I don't, I'd be shocked. I admit that my team is at least 2-3 years away from where I want it to be, and I've U2U'd KC a couple times and thought that he was at least 2-3 years away from just getting out of the bottom of the division and be competitive. Unless I make a trade, I still think I'll finish in 5th or 6th place. Heck, I only had 68 wins last season and 71 the year before that.

I wouldn't call my backups 'average'. I think they are steady, but as always with room to improve...the only backups I use are McNally, Washington, Cavett and McKee. McNally is an A/B hitter, Washington is B+/A-, Cavett (my youngest bench guy against righties) is probably the worst of them at b-/b- but he still has to develop and McKee has A power from both sides of the plate with b-/c+ contact. For backups, those are too terrible, IMO....

I still think its too early in the season to tell where the majority of teams will end up, and I wouldn't press any panic buttons yet. The other guys, Wengert, Polcovich and Searage are guys who aren't even on my backup depth chart.

I looked at your bench overall, not so much your actual backups, so maybe you're a little better off than I thought.

I changed some base stealing and pitcher settings so we will see if that helps any. The big difference has been ABE really screwing over some of my hitters. If their averages were closer to where they should be then I would be doing better. My pitchers have been pretty good actually, and to observe the absurdity of the batting woes look no further than a B+/A+ pitcher like Harper Moon with a 2.79 ERA but only a 3-3 record. Or take Zach Burton and his 2.15 ERA with only a 2-5 record.

You wanna see a good ERA & stats and a bad record, look at [url=http://www.simdynasty.com/player.jsp?player=nobody&mode=stats&id=5062432]Dolph Lundgren's[/url] 1951 season. 8-14 record with a 2.66 ERA and a 1.09 WHIP. Still don't know how he pulled that one off...

That's nothing. I got swept in the last series against Kansas City, the worst team in the league. I got some measure of revenge today but I really should have taken that middle game too. Four runs in the 10th inning with the worst hitting team in the league sitting three of it's starters against an A-/B+ relief pitcher. Yeah, right.
