Today's feelgood story, but not like anyone is really watching, what with the NBA finals and other stuff.

Coach Corky Palmer announced his retirement from coaching baseball at the University of Southern Mississippi earlier this year, and now...

The Southern Miss baseball team has defeated Florida in Super-Regionals to make their first trip to the College World Series. Ever.

TO THE TOP, BABY.

And Ole Miss has died in the super-regionals for the 4th time in 5 years. 3 of those times, they took 1-0 leads to lose games 2 and 3, while hosting.

The SEC is a football first conference?

That doesn't mean they ignore baseball. Florida, LSU, Auburn and Ole Miss (who between the 50s and only very recently had a very large void in their part of the football contributions to the conference) have had consistently good baseball programs. I don't know much about the entire conference in respect to baseball, but I find these four most often finding their way into national attention on a fairly regular basis when that time comes around every year.

SEC is big in baseball. If you went by comparison to football, no conference would be big in baseball. 7 of the teams in this years field of 32 were SEC.

Goat
Ole Miss championships extended into the 60's . . . not much better but FWIW.

I knew it had been a while. And I don't really count the Eli years because, well, they may have cracked the top 25 maybe a couple weeks in his four years. And maybe... went to some obscure bowl game no one remembers.

It's 64, isn't it?

Texas State got into the tournament as an at large, which was bizarre. They were even in the top 25 for a week.

Nothing good has happened in Mississippi since George Wallace was shot.

Wait, that was Alabama.

Nothing good ever happens in Mississippi.

Except the North Mississippi Allstars...
