Tanking - the other white meat

March 23, 2004 at 02:36AM View BBCode

So I've gotten to the point where I just don't care about tanking.
I see plenty of owners doing it, so I have to do it to keep up!
I'm sure that they would tell me that they got that D+ 18 pitcher of waivers and put him on the top of the pitching rotation to develop him, but we all know it's a lie!!

So now I got a whole roster of pitchers with D's! HA!
Deal!!!!!:P:P:P:P:P

if they are young players who is trying to develop, its not really tanking. Tanking is intentionally losing to get better draft picks, not playing young guys to get better.

There is no incentive to play 30+ year old players when your team has no chance of making the playoffs, so why do it?

This is different, this team was getting close to the cellar and I am in his way.
He's got nothing but 20-25 year olds already on his team, there are plenty of guys who could use improves over a pitcher off waivers who will never amount to anything suddenly getting a prime position in the rotation.

It just gets my goat.
So no more will I sit back and let him steal as much youth as possible, i'm fighting him on his turf.
I'm going to tank, no, i'm going to crater in such a magnificent way that years from now old people will tremble when they relate the tale to their grandchildren....

a single-digit win season?

March 23, 2004 at 02:55AM View BBCode

No, it's still early on in the dynasty league, so we have 22 wins as the lowest yet so far.
(set by me, but that's besides the point...)

I'm sure with talent inflation, there will be tanks getting single digits for wins, just not yet...

I'm not sure if sinking to their level is a good idea, but best of luck with the tanking. Hey I love your sig. Did you make that picture of Ronald or find it on the internet?

I found it on the internet...

But I am left with little choice but to sink to the mucky depths of tankage.
This team already has a lineup top to bottom of 22-25 year olds all at least B-, all leftie bats and rightie pitchers, yet he tanks to get YET MORE TALENT.
Greedy bastard, I just want to slow his inevitable ascent to the top...

well, It seems that your first try at a dynasty league didnt quite work out too well.

there have been seasons in custom leagues where people have won less than 10 games- if pressed i could find one or two

Wow...even being in the league you are talking about, I didn't quite realize what was going on. Guess I was abosrbed in my own team there and trying to make them competitive.

That is really fricking stupid, what he's doing, as its so obvious he's tanking just to get a top pick. I suppose he's entitled to do it by the rules, but it seems a bit silly all in all.

Oh well, not much you can do about it. Don't sacrifice your own team just to spite him. Besides, his starting pitching isn't that great that he's going to rocket to the top of the league any time soon.

why dont u report him. tanking is considered cheating and it could get him thrown out. its not right what he is doing.

No, it is not. It is really lame but it is not cheating, I have no problem with teams playing all teenages so long as those guys are worthy prospects (at least C overall, no matter the talent in the league) but starting D+ guys is just weak. You would figure if you wanted the #1 pick you could find some guys who are worthy of improvement chances and would still be bad enough for you to get that #1 pick.

True, it is pretty weaselly what is going on.
I didn't want to tank, I've been playing my best guys all year, but since I traded
by best two pitchers who were old for a couple of can't miss prospects
i've taken a step back.

It just burns me a bit, since he already has almost all the youth in the
league, how much do you need?

And to Happy's statement, no, I don't have a great record so far.
I'm set for the future, but it took a while to get there, seems I like trading
a bit more than winning.

Here's the pitcher who suddenly got the first spot in the rotation.
Somehow, I don't think he's going to be an all-star anytime soon...

The pitcher in question did manage to get a win!
But only because he was playing me and I put this guy against him...

WA-HAAAAA!!
I didn't even really need it, I got plenty of prospects, just didn't
want that other guy to have it.

well thats good. proves tanking doesnt work, unless u out tank the competition. that shouldnt be how the game is played though. u should be playing to win no matter what, not tanking so in 5 seasons u can dominate. thats not fun or fair to the other owners in the league who paid for competitive baseball. but syco, u did what u had to do to atleast try and discourage this guy from trying it again. in the TCL we have a 50% vet rule that i think should be used by all leagues. i believe 4 players in ur starting lineup and 5 in ur rotation must be over 26, or something like that. ofcourse u could get around that by picking up crappy vets and playing them but it atleast makes a dent into the problem. it has worked extremely well in the TCL, we have 7 teams in the NL with a legitamite shot at the playoffs including 3 teams within a game of first. in the AL we've got 5 teams with a shot at the playoffs. we are currently at game 115.

I just traded all my half decent guys when I tried to rebuild, and if you look at my signature, it hasn't worked great.

March 27, 2004 at 09:02AM View BBCode

You look like you could just use some control pitching (I say that like it is easy to do and not all that vital)

Your position players have great speed and good defense. Not great hitting, but respectable (it is tough to tell with talent inflation). But seriously, I would be hopeful with a roster like that. Make one or two good trades, select some good first-round pitchers, or get lucky with improves on those two 24-year olds in the minors, and you may make a game of it yet, no?

wow, a 9 year rebuilding project. thats frustrating. good luck with it.

I think next year I'll be turning a corner, I will devote my pick to someone I can use right now, I got three pitchers in the minors I'm working on already!
But who knows if it will work out...
The draft is tomorrow for me, any advice?
