jes for grins, what's your alltime team of guys who aren't in the HOF (leave off guys who aren't eligible yet, banned guys like Rose). 5 starters, 4 relievers on the staff:

RSP JR Richard
RSP Jack Morris
LSP Tommy John
RSP Blyleven
RSP Luis Tiant

RP Lee Smith
RP Quisenberry
RP John Franco
RP Kent Tekulve

C Bill Freehan
1B Boog Powell
2B Billy Doran
3B Santo (if he ever makes it in the HOF, Darrell Evans)
SS Dickie Thon (I think he woulda made the HOF had Torrez not shattered his skull)
LF Rock Raines
CF Cesar Cedeno
RF Dwight Evans

Bench:
C Lance Parrish
1B/OF Dick Allen
IF Freddie Patek
OF Jose Cruz

Honorable mention:
Don Mattingly
Jim Kaat
Bob Boone
Dale Murphy
Frank White
Milt Pappas

This team, if assembled with these guys in their prime, would win 100 games easy, maybe 120.

Have fun poking holes in my lineup and making your own!

You need yourself some Allen Trammell

I named him, silly. (Dick Allen)

Look, I love me some Dickie Thon, and I especially love me some Dickie Thon's mustache, but putting him on this team is just silly.

wow. there are a lot of astros on that list. you can't seriously think bill doran is a better player than robbie alomar? or that dickie thon was really better than tony fernandez or allen trammell or even hubie brooks or tim foli or dave concepcion, just off the top of my head? freddie patek? really?
shep1582

February 26, 2010 at 06:00AM View BBCode

yeah, Trammell is a better choice, yer right.

I figured Alan would be in by now.

Thon was the best young SS in the game when he got beaned, and fought like hell to get back into the game and had a few decent seasons. One good one in Philly. That was a real shame. My mom and I were at the game. The sound was sickening. We thought he died for a few minutes.

Also, the 84 Tigers would beat this team

Alomar is excluded cuz i think he's gonna be in the HOF, deke.

Doran was a terrific ballplayer. Thon was on the verge of superstardom.

(I didn't even bother looking at your bench. Dick Allen should not be on it.)

Matt Freaking Nokes man, you ain't got that.
dirtdevil

February 26, 2010 at 06:08AM View BBCode

he does have two tigers catchers on the list, both of whom were better than matt nokes.

dick allen is a better choice than freddie patek. and i can't imagine there's another person in the world other than bill doran who would actually start bill doran ahead of frank white.

lol... greedy bassard.

allen or boog is a tuff call tyles. Allen played a lot of positions, 3B, OF, 1B. I figured he was better as my 4th OF/1B. At his best, he was a HOFer, at his worst, he was undependable. He was amazing for about half his career.

OK, but just a lineup, and without any repeats from shep's list (sorry, Santo; I get Dick Allen because he put him on the bench):

C Thurman Munson
1B Gil Hodges
2B Lou Whitaker
3B Dick Allen
SS Alan Trammell
LF Frank Howard
CF Kenny Lofton
RF Dave Parker
DH Fred McGriff

I didn't count Robbie Alomar because he'll get in next year, but I could have.

Seems like McGuire will make someones team.

(Not mine)
shep1582

February 26, 2010 at 06:35AM View BBCode

McGriff's gonna make the hall, I think.

My team would kill yours, tyles. Dave Parker sux.

(good list though, if enough guys make teams, we'll do a vote thing.)
Tyles

Dave Parker's in my lineup because I couldn't take Tim Raines. You want me to do it over, I take Raines at LF and shift Frank Howard over to right.
shep1582

February 26, 2010 at 07:09AM View BBCode

naw. just bustin ya.

(Cruz was better than all these guys, but I'd get hung in effigy if I took him in LF over Raines)

There, I cleaned it up considerably. Would like to not have facking Boston represented, but what can you do?

this will sound stupid (cuz it is). but I was thinking of this guy when I typed Freddie Patek:

http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/r/rojasco01.shtml

his stats are seriously skewed from playing in the 60's, for a horrendous Phillies team, too. the guy could play anywhere, and did, including pitcher and catcher. he was on the list for versatility.

So ... are you picking who were actually solid, borderline HOF candidates (like I did)? Or are you just picking people who suck but have funny names, like Dickie Thon and Cookie Rojas?

Now I made this list trying not to duplicate any names. So I don't think any of these names were mentioned which was what I was aiming for when I made my list.
