American League:
1.) Oakland Athletics:
The Athletics have a fantastic starting rotation, from Ken Meuller all the way down to Bill Trillo in the 5 spot. Great control and velocity on all of the starts, there is no easy pitcher to face in this nasty rotation. Their offense is very solid as well, tremendous starters and a very good bench to mitigate injuries and health related days off. Not a ton of power hitters but a plethora of very good contact and decent power hitting make this a scary lineup to face. I see Oakland as the team to beat in the A.L.
2.) Boston Red Sox:
The Red Sox starting 5 is very good as well, I don't think it is quite as good as the Athletics but can certainly hold their own. I like the Red Sox bullpen more than I do the Athletics, it will make for some very competitive and interesting match ups this season! The Sox offense is full of power, having very solid starters and a good bench (again to help mitigate injuries and days off). It was a tough call between the Athletics and the Red Sox we shall see where the season takes us!
3.) Seattle Mariners:
The Mariners have a solid middle aged starting rotation. These guys will be around for another 6-7 seasons and should help solidify at least the 1-4 positions. Bullpen isn't bad at all, again very full of middle aged guys. 6-7 seasons of solid relieve pitching can be expected from the Mariners bullpen. Continuing the theme, I like the Mariners offense for its age. Middle aged compared to most and solid pretty much across the board. The Mariners should be set for some serious contending runs in the next few season if they play their cards right. The potential is even their for short term contention with the Red Sox and Athletics if that's what their management wants to pursue.
4.) Los Angeles Angels:
It's a toss up for me between the Angels SP and the Mariners. Both have set themselves up very well with the middle aged selection of solid SP. The Angels bullpen is noticeably older than the Mariners with the exception of Eddie Clark and Foster Melter who will be solidifying that bullpen for a long time. The Angels have a good mix up of offensive talent (old and young). Again, a tough comparison to the Mariners as I could have gone either way.
5.) Kansas City Royals:
Starting pitchers are still relatively solid in Kansas City. I don't see this group being able to compete for the Pennant or a W.S. but are still nonetheless solid. Same can be said for the bullpen. Offensively, the Royals are very young and at the moment not all that strong. They have set themselves up for some very good players if the development gods are in their favor. Should be a very good offense in 4-5 seasons.
6.) Tampa Bay Rays:
The Rays are clearly in a development stage with their rotation. They should mature nicely over the next few seasons and grow into some solid starting pitching. The question is if they can develop enough to solidify the Rays rotation and make a push strong enough against some of the other AL monsters. Not as young on the offensive side, I would expect the Rays to make some trades to get younger and hope for some solid draft picks coming down the pike over the next few season to shore up their offense.
7.) Cleveland Spiders:
A young rotation, relatively speaking, that should develop nicely over the next couple of season. I especially like Joe McLarney as a number 1 stud on the Spiders rotation for the next 10-12 seasons. A young core of 23, 24, 25, and 26 y.o hitters at B+ or better overall, bode well for this teams ability to mature into a contender in the coming season. Just not going to happen in 1950...
8.) Texas Rangers:
The Rangers rotation is definitely on the young side. The oldest SP being George Lawson and Joe Johnson at 22. The Texas rotation can throw some heat, with the majority of their staff having rather high velocity; but the consistently low control has me concerned given ABE's fondness for control vs. velocity. Offensively, Texas has a lot to look forward to with respect to the development and maturing of some solid young bats. There is a decent mix of veteran hitter as well, so picking Texas to finish is solely based on my expectation of their young pitching staff. I would expect to see some high scoring affairs vs the Rangers this season as they have a solid offense!
National League:
1.) Brooklyn Dodgers:
The Dodgers rotation and bullpen is very solid, Larry Ortiz is clearly their weakest SP but I don't think they will have to rely on him for much work. The bullpen is pretty solid top to bottom and should provide the Dodgers with the ability to close out games. I think the Dodgers may have the best offense in the league with tremendous balance of contact vs. power and a very solid bench to boot. I like the Dodgers to win the N.L. pennant...
2.) St Louis Cardinals:
Again, very solid rotation and bullpen. No true weak link with 5 quality starters and a stud number 1 in Bob Salkeld. Offensively I put St. Louis in a really close battle with the Dodgers, monster power but Junior Ball are clearly the weak links. Should be a hell of a raise for the N.L. pennant...
3.) Chicago Cubs:
I like the Cub's rotation, but I particularly think that this clubs hitting will keep them competing for a while. Lots of power and speed should result in a decent team batting average
4.) New York Mets:
I am not much of a fan of McCall or Bowman, at least for immediate W.S. competing purposes. Bowman should turn out to be a very good pitcher when he matures in 3-4 seasons. Solid offense, Lush should continue to improve but the rest of the group is probably maxed out in their potential.
5.) Colorado Rockies:
Despite their current record I don't see Colorado staying at the top. Certainly not the most dominant rotation or bullpen in the N.L. and I wouldn't rank their offense as the best either. I don't think their bad by any means, been a pleasant surprise to see my prediction so far off axis thus far, keep it up!!
6.) San Fransisco Giants:
Decently aged rotation and bullpen should keep the Giants relevant for quite awhile. Offense is of comparable age.
7.) Milwaukee Brewers:
Very young offense and rotation with lots of room for improvements over the next few seasons. If the players mature this should prove to be a very good core group of players in 5-6 season for a legitimate push to the post season.
8.) Atlanta Braves:
Again, the braves are extremely young in pitching and hitting. Let's hope variable development doesn't spoil their chance at a post season bid in 4-5 seasons.
Sorry the completion is a little late, been crazy busy at work and home...
