David Segui, who was on last year's HOF ballot, I saw him playing independent league ball a couple years back. They don't want to give up, which, I mean, I understand a love of the game and all, but, really, there's also a line of gracefulness that they tend to go way beyond.

Trust me, Junior is leaving at the right time. He hasn't stuck around way past the point where he was effective like Rickey Henderson.

Well, let's not compare unlike things, Shepperella. When Staubach retired, a winged chariot pulled by 16 pegasi descended from heaven to collect him. But Roger told them no thank you, there's still work to be done here, at which point he proceeded to fly around the world collecting every country's nuclear arsenal and then chucked them into the sun.

He was a tremendous player, and they should start a HOF for him that doesn't include Jim Rice. Then they could add Biggio and Bagwell to it when the time comes...

I don't blame Jr for taking the kind of $$$ they're throwing around. And besides, you don't know exactly when it's time until you see you can't produce anymore. Players get off to rough starts all the time.He was a tremendous player, and they should start a HOF for him that doesn't include Jim Rice. I have; it's terrible. HORRIBLE. Like "go back to AA ball" horrible. Henderson kept coming back for YEARS after he was effective because he could still swipe bags.

That's kind of an important point, though, right? He could still do something well, even if the rest of his numbers didn't add up. And in all those twilight years, Rickey never came close to Griffey's 28 OPS+ this year. Hell, Rickey OPS'ed 127 in his age 40 season, which is exactly where Griffey is/was now.

Which would be great, but Rickey didnt retire at age 40. He played until age 44, where he went .208/.321/.306.(he couldnt just swipe bags, he could also still take the walk, he never forgot how to do that. Even had a .369 OBP in his 2nd to last season, not too terrible. But INCREDIBLY terrible for a corner outfielder)

But that's kind of my point, happy -- Rickey played four years beyond Griffey's current age, and never came close to the crushing ineptitude of Griffey's age 40 season. (Or maybe you're agreeing with me and I just can't tell/am not used to it.)

I kinda wish Griffey could have palyed one more game after announcing his retirement. Just so the fans could have given him a standing O and he could do something like run around the stadium, Ripken-esque.

Bags and Bigg were great players, Hart was a good player.
Griffey was a better player, but the Astro twins are legit HOFers, your personal bias and mancrush on Jim Hart not withstanding.

id say henderson age 44 is equivalent to griffey age 40. Both played to the point that they were completely useless.Pages: 1 2
