It is about to start for officials, so perhaps we should have a thread for the peoples.

Jesus, Nelson Mandela's great-granddaughter was killed in a car accident early this morning. This thing is cursed.

That's ... not how the offsides rule works.

(Right?)

Yea, he was offside. There needs to be two players behind the player receiving the ball, basically. That's sort of not a part of it that you ever hear, but the goalkeeper counts. The goalkeeper went forward to try and deal with the cross, and as a result was ahead of Vela. The South African player on the line wasn't enough to keep Vela onside.

I was shocked the announcer did not even know that rule. It was a great call.

Then I'm only as stupid as the color commentator. Jerks.

So, is Mexico going to find a way to lose this thing? Even though they've dominated so far ...

Well, I just talked to my friend who I grew up playing soccer with and he did not know that rule either, so I guess maybe it is more obscure than I thought. Still, I thought they were using British announcers to get us some higher quality commentary. Now I have to spend halftime rushing around facebook clearing up all the Mexico fans' misconceptions.

ESPN3 or atdhe should be able to help you out. I'd guess you know about ESPN3, so check out atdhe.net and see if you can get any of the links to work.

This is pretty much the most typically Mexican game ever. They dominate possession, sort of create but don't really do a ton, manage not to score, and then get beat on the counter. The US has done this to them, like, a bagillion times. That's more than a bazillion, by the way.

that should be "get beat on the counter or through a set piece which resulted from a counter". There.

Pretty bizarre that Guardado doesn't start for them. Hernandez (instead of Franco), too.

Boy, that South African keeper has a serious case of egghead.

Hurray, not the only one to say something clueless on the first page of the thread!

Now South Africa understands what happens when you open your borders to Mexicans too.

That may be the best analogy for a failed offside trap...in the history of the universe.

Probably about right. Still have no clue what's going to happen in that group.

That was a fun game.

I don't know how much of the next game I will get to see, but I hope Forlan tears France a new one.

So, this was linked to on deadspin. It's about how the World Cup is a terrorist plot perpetuated by the One World Government and the commie-liberal media. And it drones on, and on, and on (I mean, just try to read the thing all the way through). But there's a real fun part near the beginning, and it's about my city and everything!

Right after pointing out that the 2006 World Cup final gets killed in US TV ratings by the Super Bowl, World Series and NCAA tourney final, he drops this knowledge bomb:

A look at game attendance figures is instructive, as well. According to Major League Soccer's MLS Daily, as of June 7, 2010, the highest drawing pro soccer team, the Seattle Sounders, averaged 36,146 attendees over seven home games. Conversely, the Seattle Mariners baseball team has averaged 25,314 over 32 home games.

The Mariners are dead last in the American League West division, and 24th in the league in batting average, 30th in home runs, 27th in RBIs and 25th in number of hits. In short, they're horrible. With a record of 4-5-3, the Sounders aren't very good either, but they play in a very liberal city, are currently benefiting from World Cup year interest in their sport, and they play a schedule that allows far fewer opportunities for fans to attend.

So, the terrible Mariners fail to outdraw the mediocre Seattle Sounders, but it still fits his whole "soccer doesn't play well nationally" because Seattle is a bastion of dirty pinkos. (I'd also point out that the Sounders figures constitute a sellout, whereas the Mariners are at about half-capacity. Details.) The whole thing devolves into a bunch of right-wing fear-mongering and paranoia (look out, teh libruls are courting teh Hispanics!) from there.
