Draft Quality

November 13, 2010 at 01:24AM View BBCode

I'm sure it's and enigma, anomily ...
at least I hope it is.

I have 4 teams:
1) 3 a day
2) 9 a day
1) 12 a day

and have not seen a good draft in months, it is beyond frustration at this point and I am seriously considering quiting SD altogether.

I know the poor drafts have helped my NFL team stay on top I've been to the WS 12 of the last 13 seasons because of the terrible drafts and I'm sure the rest of the owners in the league are not very happy because of it.

But poor drafts have kept my other teams from contention.

I think when a league has been plaqued by lousy drafts for more than a few seasons the next draft should get a boost
or something should be done about the draft quality.

Just MHO ...

The only way to truly address this (that I can think of) would be to eliminate variance from the draft classes so that each draft class had a very specific set of prospects. In the past when this was brought up as a suggestion, it didn't prove popular. Though I don't see it on ideascale, so maybe it should be put up there to see what people think.

If you have other suggestions, let me know. If enough people agree, we always implement it. You should probably put this in suggest enhancements though to get some opinions from others.

Thanks Tyson, that is a great idea! I'll be busy the next few days but I will get to it as soon as I can.

I am with annointed on this one. We are both in the PTL and the latest draft class in that league is perhaps the worst that I have ever seen.

2064 PTL Draft Population:

http://www.simdynasty.com/draftbyleague.jsp?leagueid=303

There are a total of 4 Draftees rated B- or better one of which will be OS 25 when drafted and another who will be OS 21 with D/A/D+ ratings. With a bit of luck he hits A+/C+.

One of the league's owners tried to trade a top 3 pick plus a 2nd 1st round pick in exchange for a top pick in the next draft with no takers.

The draft class in the JFL is not much better. I am in rebuild mode in that league and have the misfortune of having 5 1st round picks out of this class:

I can say that the draft generation code hasn't been changed in a long time, like maybe 5 or 6 real years. So there isn't anything new behind this.

I have no problem with the draft classes, I'm in two dynasty leagues and I usually find 10-20 potentially useful guys in every draft. I certainly wouldn't want every draft class to be the same, that's boring, I look forward to league date 9/1 every season

How about making the older players in the draft have decent scores across the board? There are too many 22 year old 2B for instance, with D arms and/or D speed. Players that are drafted at OS18 would never have any skill that low at age 22. This would be one easy way to moderately improve drafts.

It wouldn't necessarily be an easy change. But if enough people wanted something like that, we'd sink time into it.

I guess bad draft class is relative. I for one don't like having to sink 25 cps over 5 years into an 18 yo only to have him be a bust. I like to draft 20 and older players who are real close to B- level. Others in my leagues like the C+ 16 yo. I guess it is all in how you want to deal with your CP's.

Just having a little fun with you... feel free to keep leaving the 16 year old C+ players for the rest of us.

I am in four paid leagues.

I personally like the variance, it's like Christmas in September.

Will there be decent prospects???

I think it prevents tanking.

I hope this would be a league to league decision.

As I would not want to be in a COOKIE CUTTER league where everyone gets a shot at the same prospect. Where is the skill in that?

I think that's a good idea, another one would be to increase the number of draftees who will be OS 18 their first year, there are a lot of 20+ year old guys who will always be worthless, but if a crappy 18 year old can latch on with a team that has no good prospects, he can develop, so that's my suggestion, i like my draftees like i like my women, 18 years old

I would also suggest getting rid of the OS25 players in amateur drafts.

I've had my share of drafts where I had three early picks and the league got a horrible draft class. Thems the breaks as they say. We shouldn't be guaranteed anything amazing because we have a top 5 (or whatever) pick.

I look at how many MLB first round picks turn into busts or never sniff the show and think of a bad draft class the same way.

I would run away from any league that has a certain set ammount of prospects in its draft class. That doesn't sound right at all.

That's what I said. There are lulls and periods of times in sports, arts, music, etc....half of it is chance, the other half of it is luck....no such thing as talent.

THE SKILL or game part is to be able to determine, through trial and error experimentation how to develop players.....

I don't see the skill in everyone getting a young 18 year old stud. It's not realistic. Everyone didn't get a Strasburg or Harper in MLB.

As I said I don't care if they add it hopefully it's an option or voted on.

I would suggest getting into an EDIT league. I was in the Mordecai Brown. It gives you options to edit the attributes like you could swap the contact and power, or convert a relief pitcher into a started. Or duplicate any draftee outside of the top five.

I think I would suggest people unhappy with drafts to try an edit league.

it is. that part of the draft coding hasn't changed since i've been here, to my knowledge. the drafts are as good (and bad) as they ever were. we just tend to think the good drafts are our just due and get irritated by the bad ones.

thing is that all 16 teams have to deal with the same draft, whether it is a good one or a bad one. if there are a bunch of mediocre players in a draft, then you've got to do your best to find the best ones. i like that challenge. so my pick might not be a hall of famer, but if i put the work in, my pick in the long run will be better than the other picks. i like the challenge and the unpredictability.

My suggestion, for what it's worth, would be: OS 18yo should be the least accomplished, representing HS players, OS 22yo should be a little more accomplished, representing college players, Of course every once in a while a gem appears (think Winfield or Gwynn). I also think that other OS ages should be held to a minimum.

Probably impossible to code, but an owner can dream.

I like the variance. I'm in the NFL too and have been at the bottom for most of the time there, but such is life.
