Quick Commentary of private league rules and future development

May 07, 2004 at 05:58PM View BBCode

Just wanted to put this out there. One of the things that has been helpful with private leagues coming up with their own rules is that it helps illustrate areas that need addressed and what is most important to people. For example, in the HAL they had a series of rules to address how easy it was to convert a RP to a SP and take advantage of that, we have hopefully fixed that issue. Another one I can think of off the top of my head is that when I noticed more and more leagues doing live drafts, I decided it was time to get a new draft system in place. Also, draft pick trading comes to mind.

In the coming weeks, I will lay out the next batch of changes and what our goals are for the next few months in terms of changes. Some things that I would like to address include:

An Initial draft that is similar to the new Amateur Draft, Talent Inflation, Anti-Tanking measures, incentives for playing veterans, a trade deadline built into the game, a Waiver system that some players have to pass through before they can be demoted, an official Injured Reserve instead of just demoting guys, changes to the OffSeason improvement system so that players don't end up clones of one another (ie all A- accross all skills), balancing power/contact and control/velocity, a more robust system for determining retirements, the age shift idea for more random player development, things to make managing multiple teams less time consuming (setting backups, getting emails when guys are no longer injured, and having trade emails provide a link directly to the trade), pinch runners, and more realistic game play in terms of running the bases.

That's probably enough stuff to take a year to do, but we will begin working on some of these items in May and throughout the summer.

That's a mighty big list and will require a lot of work, but those changes will improve an already excellent game. I would like to add one thing to the list -- defense. Right now defensive ratings don't impact the number of plays made by a player, they only impact errors he makes. It would be nice if defense played a more prominent and realistic role. Also, it would make sense to address out of position penalties at the same time. Just my 2 cents.

Bob & Matt

I second both those thoughts.

Tyson the site is great, the proposed changes are awesome, and range should have impact on whether balls fall in for hits.

Wow sounds great. This site will be AWESOME when all that is implemented. Im sure by then though we will have a new batch of things to whine and complain about;). Great job Tyson.

Wonderful Ideas...contrary to some opinions, I do love this game and this site....I just get passionate about things when I feel an injustice has taken place.

This actually is not as true as it sounds. Unfortunately, the current system gives us no feedback on how a play might have turned out differently; failed double plays, for example, show up as simple force outs. I sent some code to Tyson to expose some of this information, but I don't think he wants to look at in until this round of changes is in the bag.

I pretty generally agree that those are the issues facing SD. I am so appreciative to be involved with a businessman who listens to his customers.

My ranking of most important items:

1) Anti-tanking measures, including trying to lose all season long just to gain improvements and picks.

2) Less predictability in improvements. (Age-Shift?)

3) The anti-cloning measures which include a more realistic balance between contact/power and velocity/control.

4) Added value for vets.

5) Play of the game things like pinch runners, advancing on flyballs, etc.

6) Other things mentioned + getting the earned run/unearned run thing right.

It's a great product and the dedication of many under Tyson's leadership is making it better.

Thanks.

If you can implement even 1/2 of those ideas..It 'll make things alot more balanced....and take some of the "system" outta play

Thanks for all you do for us!!!!;)

Good deal.

Might I suggest (or re-suggest) that a morale value for each player that drops when a team loses, or when a player is benched or demoted, which eventually leads to that player wanting a trade, will limit both tanking and the non-playing of veterans, while also giving the transfer market and the value of older players a real boost.

That'd be my pick for the first development, but that list promises to keep this place at the top of the list of sports sims in the world today.
