JRL Baseball - American League Update

Were 65 games into the season (40%) and it?s starting to look like one to remember. First of all, the Tigers, yes the Tigers, area leading the entire league with a 46-19 record. Usually, at this point of the season, that?s where the Woolly Mammoths would be sitting pretty. But not this year. The Tigers have never made a playoff appearance in all of their existence and it would be neat to see it happen. Meanwhile the Woolly Mammoths, mentioned before, are in fourth place and trailing the Tigers by ten games. They have not missed a playoff series since 1982, meaning they have a record 10 straight playoff appearances. But the transition to Minnesota and the name change to Lake Monsters seems to have been hard on the franchise. Here is a breakdown on the top 4 teams:
Detroit Tigers (46-19)- Its no wonder why they are a top of the league when you take a look at their pitching staff. Four of their five starters have ERA?s under 3 and in their entire pitching staff, only one pitcher has an ERA over 4 and he has only pitched 4 innings. They sport the second best fielding percentage in the league with a .988 FPCT and are just playing fundamentally sound baseball. Their offense is a bit of a weak spot. Only one starter is hitting better than .300 and they strike out an awe full lot. But you know the old saying, pitching and defense wins games, and that sure is the case for the Tigers. Can they finally make their first playoff appearance in the 44th season of JRL baseball?
Chicago Catch (43-22)- The Catch have been an up and coming team for seasons now and this looks like the year they put it all together. Like Detroit, their starting pitching staff is getting the job done with 4 of 5 starters with ERA?s under 4. Bill Narleski is leading the way with his 2.28 ERA and 10-2 record. What a turn around from last seasons 0-8 start. I know he started 0-8 because he got his first win against me LOL. The Catch also sport one of the scariest offense?s in the league. Their lineup is bursting with raw power; just about any one of their regulars can hit the ball out of the stadium. Their weakness lies in the bullpen. All but one of their relievers have ballooned ERA?s of over 4. However, this group of Catch has been playing together some time now and has had a winning record for the last 4 seasons. They have gotten extremely close to making the playoffs the last two seasons. They can taste October Baseball and I believe they will make it this season.
New York Salseros- What can I say about my dear Salseros? Were currently in third place with a 38-27 record. Our offense has a nice balance of attack with a mix of contact, speed and power. Juan Mendoza is having a breakout season in just his 3rd year of play and Tyler Slyfer has become of the leagues premier catchers, something we have not had since Orlando Amor in the ?70s. Julio Andrade is having his typical monster season and newly acquired SS Ted Bellhorn is starting to heat up and play good ball. Cosme Avendano got off to a nightmare start, but is getting better. Our pitching has been something of a problem. Although Eliseo J Flores is having a Cy young type season, Tim Wong and Mike Miley really need to improve their game and the bull pen needs to be less shaky. If our pitching staff can figure it out and stay consistent, we should be ok.
Minnesota Lake Monsters ? They still have one of the most dangerous offenses in the game. The problem is that their pitching staff has aged and old GM Mark is no longer around to rip other teams off of their top talent in exchange for crap. They do have some niece pieces they may consider to trade if they decide to become sellers. But lets not rush to conclusions, they are 36-29 and were only 40% of the way into the season. There is a lot of baseball to be played and they have made the playoffs for the last 10 years. Don?t count them out!

Honestly, now that he's gone, I don't know who to pin more of the blame on, Mark or the idiots who accepted the deals he offered to them.

The Catch are 13-18 since this league update was posted and continue to struggle living up to their potential. After being swept at home by the rebuilding Seattle Sonics, they now find themselves in 4th place. On paper this should definitely be a contending team, but for the 3rd season in a row, they are not meeting the expectations of the fans or the front office. Not time to hit the panic button yet, but the tide needs to change soon or management may start reconsidering the makeup of this team.
