Jack Goodwin was ten when Joe Novak pitched his first major league game. At sixteen Goodwin was Novak's biggest fan, watching him earn the first of his five Cy Young awards. Four and a half years ago, Goodwin was a graduating Education major at Duquesne, had no job lined up and was applying as a convenience store clerk when his wife got the phone call from the Washington Wings. And later today, he takes the mound against his childhood idol to try to prevent him from becoming the first 300 game winner ever!
Goodwin's only comment was "I'm just trying to stay focused on a game that's tied 0-0 right now." Novak, known to routinely sleep until nearly game time on his pitching days, could not be reached for comment.
