Who should be the catchers this year? There are many very deserving candidates.

Varitek.

Boston bias. :D

Props to Posada anyhow.

Posada, his numbers are the best.

Javy Lopez (BAL) 54GP .300-.351-.433 (0SB/0CS)

Ivan Rodriguez (DET) 53GP .353-.392-.518 (5SB/0CS) good defense

Jorge Posada (NYY) 50GP .276-.420-.546 (1SB/1CS)

Victor Martinez (CLE) 53GP .309-.376-.557 (0SB/1CS)

Jason Varitek (BOS) 54GP .283-.394-.465 (4SB/2CS)

Overall:
1. Posada (will probably be backup)
2. Rodriguez (will probably be starter)
3. Martinez (might be Cleveland's representative, could make it as backup)
4. Varitek (doesn't deserve it)
5. Lopez (doesn't deserve it)

Would you classify Piazza as a catcher? He still plays about half his games behind the plate

I know this post is about the AL but I'm curious if you still consider him a catcher?

Anyway, my vote goes to Posada. I hate voting for a Yankee but he's doing very well this year

No, but they did on the ballot right?

yes, he is a catcher, even though he can't throw anyone out. he plays there and takes the strain of playing there most days. he is ok at blocking pass balls/wild pitches, and Mets pitchers ERA is a full run lower with him catching than with the other catchers used (whoever it is).

Posada should start and Pudge should be the backup. Jorge has put up great offensive numbers and has played some very good defense. He threw out a runner from his knees to seal a win a couple days ago against the Rockies and is very good at blocking the plate. He isnt as good at throwing guys out as Pudge is but he is very good. Pudge has played great D and has put up good offensive numbers (just not as good as Jorge's) so he deserves to make it too.

Victor Martinez! Look at those RBI's. He should be classified as Rookie (however not). He might become the greatest hitting catcher to play the game.

Viva Victor! Mauer who?

Guess who I voted for...;)

I like Victor alot. He is a good young catcher. Best offensive catcher ever? Probably not.

I think he is in the top 3 of the above list, with Pudge and Jorge, but I think his numbers are better than Javy and Varitek.

Soon to be best ever. He won a Single A batting title in his first year and a Double A title in year 2. The reason he didn't win Triple A last year is because he spent to much time in the majors.

1. Pudge
2. Posada
3. Martinez

Varitek & Lopez don't deserve to go.
