England will still get out of the group probably, but it will take more work now. Portugal screwed themselves, now they have to at least beat Spain or Russia and tie the other probably, because they lost to Greece.

yup...they were weak....Portugal that is...and it serves England right for trying to protect the damn 1 goal lead...the best defence is a good offence...damn....What were Heskey and then Gerrard thinking?

When referring to one goal, is "offense" really the right word?

yeah maybe they should make a goal worth say 12 points then you would see more scores like 24-12 then us americans would think there was more action.

look what its done for tennis

well I don't like soccer but it is the #1 sport in the world. I try watching it every once in a while just to see if I can find what people like about it but the rules confuse me. Why does the clock stop sometimes when the ball goes out of bounds and keeps running other times? And how come when time expires they add an extra couple of minutes? The rules are very weird to someone who doesn't know them.

If you took away offsides it would probably be a lot more appealing to most Americans.

Nothing you can do to soccer is ever going to make Americans care about it more.

You could make them play Grenada every day, giving the appearance that America is the best at it. I think the US is rated 9 now out of 204, which is like the best ever for it. But still most Americans only flock to sports that the US dominate.

Totally agree. Soccer is fun to play, but extremely boring to watch.

Exactly. I love to play it but I can't stand to watch it on TV.

Also they are never going to change the rules just to get a few more Americans to watch.

I try watching it every once in a while just to see if I can find what people like about it but the rules confuse me.

You really have to have played it to enjoy it at all, and sometimes that isn't enough.

I tried playing it before just screwing around in my friend's backyard. I couldn't quite grasp how to kick a ball and run at the same time, lol. I guess I'm not coordinated enough, I always fell over or tripped over the ball.

It is fun to play and boring to watch. There is hardly any scoring. You could say the same thing about Hockey but there are body checks and many scoring opportunities. That sport is fun to watch.

Is soccer really that complicated? Let's see, you kick a ball, into a goal, with a big wide net, and you don't touch the ball with your hands unless you're the goalie. You can't be passed the ball if you're behind all the defenders. If you kick it out behind your goal, it's a goal kick, otherwise it's a corner kick. Is there really any more to it than that? People who like soccer always say that Americans don't like it because it's too cerebral, or there's not enough scoring, or it doesn't give you the quick fix, or whatever else. In most of the world, soccer is a game for the masses, in other words the lower classes. Believe me, I've seen English soccer fans, and they'd just as soon kick you in the nuts as discuss the finer points of the corner kick.

No, Americans don't care about soccer, not because we're too stupid or too lazy but simply because, basically, we just don't. I mean, if a bunch of Union Soldiers had gotten together after the Battle of Gettysburg and organized an 11 on 11 soccer match, then Alex Rodriguez would be a 250 million dollar midfielder for the New York United of the Professional Soccer Association. They played baseball, and ARod is in pinstripes. If the blue bloods attending Harvard and Yale in the late 1800's had decided to form a gentleman's soccer league called the Ivy League, then Carson Palmer would have been a striker for USC instead of a quarterback. Volumes and volumes have been written about why Americans don't like soccer because "we just don't" isn't a satisfying answer, so we accuse ourselves of not being worldly enough to appreciate the nuances of the sport. Well I've got some news: soccer doesn't have that many nuances. It's just like every other damn team sport. Sometimes fate is just fickle, and our fate was to like baseball and football and think that soccer is something silly Europeans play.
