Hall of Fame?
October 12, 2012 at 11:13PM View BBCode
Is anyone else interested in establishing a Hall of Fame for the JEL?
I think it's about time now that we have 40 years of history, but it will only work if most owners are willing to nominate players and vote.
I'm willing to serve as Hall of Fame coordinator if there's enough interest in setting one up. I have never done it before, so if someone is experienced coordinating and has done so before I'd willingly defer to them.

The HOF idea came up many seasons ago but at that time there wasnt enough interest, i.e. response to the new HOF topic, to get it started. The probelm with starting 40 years into the league is to put in the time to get someone or a committee to spend enough time to gather the info on the old players. My experience is that if you leave it to each team to research their team history to come up with player nominees not all teams will do it and maybe not even half will do it. I am the commish of this league but I dont really have time to get involved in gathering this information. I would vote each time there are candidates to consider.
I am the HOF coordinator of the Robin Roberts Lg and each new season I go thru the list of retirees from the previous season and present a list of HOF nominees. I then ask the league if anyone else has a nominee not on my list. There have been very few additions over the years. Anyway after we have the complete list we present it (the HOF coordinator presents the list) to the league for a vote. We never get all 16 owners to vote but we usually get 11 or 12 which works just fine for us.
If kjw239 will volunteer to be the HOF coordinator maybe you can get some of the other owners responding to this thread to be on a HOF committee to see how to get it started.
I will answer any questions you have about how it works in other leagues I am in or any other questions you might have.
Good luck

Thanks for the info Commish.
I agree with what you are saying about old players potentially slipping through the cracks if we just rely on all 16 owners to nominate their own players. In another league I am in this has been a constant issue, especially with franchises that have had many owners over the years.
I would be happy to gather info on retired players decade by decade to put together initial nomination lists as we try to catch up, which could obviously be supplemented by any owner who thought that a player was missed.
Since Todibus has expressed an interest in working on this too and his team is in the NL, maybe he'd be willing to coordinate the NL nominees and I could coordinate the AL nominees to cut the workloads in half?
And I'm certainly fine not being that involved in the process at all if there are others who are real motivated to run this... I'm really not trying to dominate the process, I just would like to help get it moving along so we can get players nominated and up for a vote and into a Hall of Fame.
Before we even get to the point where we could nominate players at the end of each season as joetinker suggests, we'd probably need to hold votes for players retired in the 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s to catch up. And also obviously establish some rules regarding the H of F and how many votes it takes to get elected once nominated.
Attached are the rules from the APL, which I am a member of... obviously we could edit these as necessary to address the issues that the Commish brought up and change them any way we need to meet the needs of the JEL:
APL Hall of Fame
The APL Hall of Fame
Hall of Fame Induction Process and Rules
Hall of Fame coordinator- Phil (prmccarthy - philadelphia fatals)
Player requirements
Player must be retired and played a minimum of 10 seasons.
Special consideration will be be given those who primarily played in the 1950's and retired with less than 10 seasons played.
Step 1 - Nominations
All owners may nominate a player(s). Theoretically, each owner should track his own retirees and nominate those he thinks are deserving of enshrinement. When nominating a player, please post a link to his card and any anecdotal info you feel is relevant eg: was a 5 time All-Star, who retired 6th in HR, 5th in RBI and 4th in OPS- that sort of stuff.
The HOF nominations thread will be opened each year in SIM-May by the HOF commissioner and will remain open until SIM-June.
Step 2 - Official Ballot
Once all nominations are received, an official ballot will be sent out by the HOF coordinator via a HOF voting thread.
Step 3 - Voting
Each owner in the league will receive 1 yes/no vote for EACH nominee. They may also abstain from voting. Although, the participation of all league members is strongly encouraged. Owners may cast their votes on the voting thread or via u2u to the HOF commissioner (prmccarthy). The voting thread will be open SIM-June and will close SIM-July.
Step 4 - Tallying the vote
Once the voting thread has been closed, the HOF coordinator will tally the vote. The voting criteria for enshrinement is as follows:
To be inducted into the hallowed halls of the PWL Hall of Fame, a player must receive a minimum of 2/3rds (67%) of the votes cast with a minimum of 10 owners voting.
Eligibilty/Renomination Requirements
A. Once a player has been nominated, he will remain on the ballot for a maximum of 3 seasons. Players receiving less than 2 yes votes in any year will be forever removed from the ballot.
B. A player who receives at least 2 yes votes may stay on the ballot for a maximum of 3 years before being dropped from the ballot.
Any thoughts?

I'd certainly always vote. I'd be limited as far as time to research but could help a little. I'm wondering if it would work better if we broke it initially into chunks, maybe catching up a few years at a time? Such as, first the retirees from the 50's, then 3 years worth at a time, or something like that, until we catch up?
I don't think 10 years service should be required. If a player's record suffices in less time, we will vote him in. We just have to pay attention.

I think a Hall of Fame is a valuable addition to any league and I am in favor. In the two other leagues I am getting people to vote has been a problem. I have failed to cast ballots a couple of times myself, because the polls are only open a week and the time got away from me.
In one league, the commissioner decides on the candidates with no input from owners and in the other there seems to be a minimal criteria of 3 all star appearances, which seems like a pretty generous standard. That hall of fame also keeps players on the ballot for multiple years if they receive a high enough percentage of the vote.
I'm happy to support the idea and even happier that others are willing to step up and do the hard work.

One idea of how to start the HOF at this point is to model it after the Major League HOF which started in the 30s. Their first HOF class were the greatest retired stars of those 30+ years, Babe Ruth, Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Walter Johnson etc. At this time the following players hold the various all time career records, for retired players, in our league......Ray Avala HR & rbi; Kevin Avenarius hits, doubles, sb; Aubrey Scanlon batting ave, obp & ops; Walt Seanez triples, Sam Korven walks (hitter); Bruey Bruton slugging; Brent Gardner, Eric Avenarius Josh Fanter (runs leader), Matt Leppert, Ed Bouldin all have outstanding offensive records.
pitching wise........... Joe Novak wins,; Willie DeBerry era; Ed Knauss cg; Hub Hahn shutouts; Tony Paxton ks; Otto Graham whip; Phil Nahorodny innings
I am not saying that all of these players should be in the first HOF class (although there is an argument to be made for each one) but these players are retired and are definitely among the best to play in this league. Just an idea.
