Daring Predictions

October 17, 2013 at 12:02PM View BBCode

Okay, all in fun...
I worked out a little prediction calculator based on starting line ups and pitching staffs. It doesn't take into account depth or defense, so I have good excuses if it is way off. Here is what it predicts for 2008 in the AL:

1. New York
2. Tampa Bay
3. Chicago
4. Seattle
5. Cleveland
6. Minnesota
7. Boston
8. Texas

No offense intended. The numbers were close, with NY-TB-Chi bunched together, then Sea-Cle, then Min-Bos-Tex. Trades, Injuries, Defense, and Luck will all mess up my calculations, which are based on assumptions that might not be true anyway. Bill James I'm not.

I'll try to get the NL and WS done later, but I'm out of time this morning.

Cool! Predictions are always fun twice. Hopefully later on we'll be marveling over how you got everything right but the order of the first two!

P.S.

I have the National League Predictions

1. Philly
2. Crap
3. Garbage
4. Horror Show
5. Gross
6. Talentless
7. Putrid
8. Embarrassing

This division has been a one horse race for a while now. Maybe someone can get lucky. But its Philly and a bunch of stinkers.

National League:

1. Philadelphia
2. Los Angeles
3. Florida
4. Brooklyn
5. Milwaukee
6. St. Louis
7. Houston
8. Pittsburgh

There is a significant gap between Philly and the rest of the league. But the rest of the NL is very closely bunched, with all seven teams ranking higher than the bottom three in the AL, so there is more parity (after clear leader Philly) and the overall rating for the two leagues is very close. In fact the average team in the NL has a higher ranking than the average team in the AL, even with two less highly ranked teams. The closest races should be the three-way race for the top two spots in the AL and the battle for second in the NL, at which all 7 teams have a good shot.

World series, New York over Philadelphia.

Top Ten Power Rankings:

1. New York (AL)
2. PHiladelphia (NL)
3. Tampa Bay (AL)
4. Chicago (AL)
5. Los Angeles (NL)
6. Florida (NL)
7. Brooklyn (NL)
8. Milwaukee (NL)
9. Seattle (AL)
10. Cleveland (AL)

Sometimes it's like that. Tempers started 2-7 this year.

Maybe my predictions have the power of the dreaded Sports Illustrated cover jinx!

I'm sure I'm the only one, but I hope your system works Greyfan!

Well, I was close. Apparently the factors I left out (mainly depth and defense) actually matter.

I got the right NL team in the WS, but Tampa crossed me up in the AL. Also apparently Pittsburgh took offense at my picking them last and went on a mission.

My predictions again (with actual finish in parenthesis)

AL
1. New York (2)
2. Tampa Bay (1)
3. Chicago (4)
4. Seattle (5)
5. Cleveland (3)
6. Minnesota (7)
7. Boston (6)
8. Texas (8)

NL
1. Philadelphia (1)
2. Los Angeles (2)
3. Florida (3)
4. Brooklyn (T5)
5. Milwaukee (T5)
6. St. Louis (7)
7. Houston (8)
8. Pittsburgh (4)

Ha! I haven't had time to run it yet, but stay tuned?.(the accuracy ought to improve but won't because it doesn't consider wins and losses even as they happen)
