Aiming for records

March 05, 2014 at 04:48PM View BBCode

There has been some bad pitching in the National League this year, and partly as a result of that we have some single-season batting records in jeopardy.

The highest batting average in NGL history is .364, posted by Bill Perry in 1952. Nobody has even hit better than .350 since 1959, and the best batting average this century was .343 .

So it is remarkable to see Mule Kerfeld of Colorado hitting a scorching .373 in early August! Here's a link to Kerfeld's card:

His current OPS of 1.058 would be good enough for fifth-best all-time if the season ended today.

Go Mule!

and in the NL, we're lucky to get a .300 hitter with 30 homers

I just did a quick count of 80+ rated pitchers on major league rosters and got 30 in the AL and only 14 in the NL. That explains a few things on my offense haha!

You don't want to be in the AL. The reigning 2 time World Series Champ is here and will keep dominating for the next 5-7 seasons & more if I possibly can. As long as the pitching staff sticks together we will be at the top for the next decade........

Not to mention Oakland who staff is also built for the long term

Oakland's pitchers are all heading into there 30's & a few are heading into declines in 2 seasons, I am not worried about them....Much respect because they are in 1st place though.....:D

Oakland has done it without trading away ANY of his draft picks! An excellent example of building a sustainable dynasty. My hat is off to him!

Part of being a good owner is to make trades, take chances, make mistakes and make BIG moves. By sitting on all your draft picks is not the smartest way to build a team. This is just my opinion but if I would of just joined the league sat on my picks, I would not of won 2 World Series Championships especially with the HORRENDOUS drafts we have had the last 2-3 seasons. I am sorry but I will take that hat stomp on it and do things my way.......Oakland, see you in the playoffs!!!!!!!!!

It looks to me as if both teams have about the same ages in both offense and pitching

I disagree with that statement. My core is 26-28 on my pitching staff, Fats is 30 but that ok he will be good until he is 36 as a fifth starter. On the offensive side my 5 core players are 27-30 years old. I have plans on replacing the other 3 in the next few seasons......I am going to miss my guys that I got from Montreal. Kurt Pearson, Jack Tomasic, Roy Dodd & especially Tommy Pitlock were true professional players & helped us win 2 Titles.......I expect Milt Lerchen, Ed Chapman, & Jack Perez to pick up most of the slack.....

Well, we can only be glad there's more than one way to build and win....and that you seem to have regular trading partners!

But then again what am I saying.....don't know much about winning!

If you look at the AL MVP race you can see how much weight is given to wins--Mariano Stewart had a much better year statistically than Jimmy Lyden did, but Lyden was on a much better team, so Lyden won the MVP.

What else do these guys have in common? They are both Houston draftees!

Great season for Kerfeld! Nice to see an all-time record fall.

Just as there have been many a season in the Major Leagues where I have questioned the MVP and CY Young voting, Sim duplicates that pretty well too.

I guess that 160 games played, 654 AB and another Gold Glove contributed as well because his OPS, OBP and SLG are very average.
