Should ABE Have a Sense of Humor?
October 25, 2014 at 05:09AM View BBCode
So you get one of those players with low Health. Injured often. Sometimes several times a year.
I think ABE should be programmed to have a little fun with that.
Injury #1: Joe Weakling was injured in today's game and is expected to be out for 17 days.
Injury #2: Joe Weakling was injured again in one of today's games and will be out for 27 days. Time to roster a strong utility player.
Injury #3: Joe Weakling was once **again** injured in one of today's games and will be out for 9 days. The team trainer has been sacked.
Injury #4: Joe Weakling was injured in today's game and will be out for 38 days. Joe is heavily contemplating a safer line of work.

But seriously, if a guy gets hit with an injury three or more times in the same season, his Health should take a hit. And/or his attributes should drop 4 points across the board until the OS, when they are restored.
I also think it would be neat if ABE could be programmed to say (for injuries less than 15 days):
Joe Weakling was injured in today's game and is listed as day-to-day, unavailable for 12 games.

Just some idle thought from the early hours...

I would only be willing to consider this is the opposite is true- if a guy goes a season without x number of injuries, his health increases. you can't just do one.

I would be okay with Health increasing for injury-free years up to about OS22, or perhaps for draft age+2. As young players are exposed to major league training methods and regimens, this makes sense. But I think there does come a point when you get as healthy as you're going to get within the game, and it's all downhill from there.

low health guys already get an unfair double-hit: they play fewer games due to 'fatigue' AND they're more prone to injuries. to add a third factor against them is hugely inequitable.

Huh. Just like life.
But yeah, I see what you mean. The fatigue thing should probably go away. Just because I'm easily injured shouldn't automatically mean I don't have the energy to play every day.
On the other hand, you could look at it: the high fatigue ratio probably *saves* them from being injured even
more often. Like a manager who knows his guy is on the fragile side and sits him every few games. Plus low Health grades also get the bump in IC Conversions.
So maybe it's not as inequitable as it first seems...?

If injuries can lower health, then you'd have to increase the health for amateur draftees, as well as allow for health improvement for saying healthy for x number of games.
You could tie the amount of health increase to their current health. For example, an A health guy would have to play an entire season w/o getting hurt, and then his increase would still only be small, like 1 point. A player with D+ health might only need to be healthy for a total of 145 games, and then would get a bigger increase in health, maybe as much as 8 points, if he stayed healthy all year.

According the FAQ hitters health can increase now:

Not sure how small the increase is since I have not really tracked it (except when my pitchers lose it lol)...

Interesting! But we need a definition of "small increase."

no. not at all like life. the guy who has a history of nagging injuries is not necessarily the one who misses huge swaths of a season or career to major injuries. how many guys don't miss a start until they need tommy john? the guy who misses 40 games with a leg injury and then misses another 25 with an oblique usually plays every day in between. needing a recurrent rest day and large numbers of catastrophic injuries do not have a causal relationship.
But yeah, I see what you mean. The fatigue thing should probably go away. Just because I'm easily injured shouldn't automatically mean I don't have the energy to play every day.
exactly

you could look at it that way, sure. and if you do, you are always free to put any of your players on that type of schedule yourself, as manager. but right now the game imposes it along with the larger number of major injuries and that's not equitable.
Plus low Health grades also get the bump in IC Conversions.
to help offset the loss of playing time from, the mandated rest. all it does it restore them to where they 'should' be. it's not a bonus. that bump in and of itself is an acknowledgement that the system is unfair.
So maybe it's not as inequitable as it first seems...?
or, maybe it is.

cool idea, or maybe instead of ABE we could have the ability to edit News posts involving our team, so we could put our own comments in there:
Joe Weakling was injured in today's game and is expected to be out for 17 days. [b]Fell off the jetway again.[/b] or [b]rolled his ankle on a 4th-inning double[/b].
Could also be used in trade reports:
Trade #1257462 has been completed between the San Francisco Criminals and the Pittsburgh Whiskey Rebels. The Pittsburgh Whiskey Rebels receive Draft Pick - 1997 Round 3 (SF) from the San Francisco Criminals in exchange for Freddie Blankenship. [b]I hope Freddie can give me a few decent innings and mentoring before he declines, 3rd is worth it.[/b]
I think there should be more places to communicate like that on site, not just on u2u/MB. I think a running commentary right on the Standings page would be cool. Lot of space on that page. Private messages (trade talks) on the left, league-wide blasts (trade blocks, hot streaks) on the right.

Just to be clear, the "just like life" comment was about the inequities found in life, not in the way Health is treated within the game.
And Paul, I *like* that idea. Put a "Add Comment" button with a limited text field wherever a comment might be able to add depth or just snark. Might strengthen the ownership community.

That may have been the case back in 2004, but I can tell you without any doubt, that player's do not got an increase in health if they play a full season. I'm in a numbers league...they only go down. :(
