The Edmonton Colonels own an impressive 10-2 record that has them sitting narrowly atop the AFC West Division one game ahead of the Omaha Blue Jays.
Aside from the record, nothing extravagant jumps out at you about this team. Their starting quarterback, Frank Pacheco, has been passed in player rankings at quarterback by his recently acquired backup, Keith Thomason and neither of them ranks all that high; 14 and 15.
The Colonels butter their bread with their running game and keep it stoked by using a stable of runners. Dan Herline leads the group with 740 yards on 178 attempts. John Slaughter, a halfback acquired from Anaheim for the team's leading receiver Paul Hein, in a surprising trade, follows with 366 yards, Johnny Brown has 286 and has scored four touchdowns rushing and two receiving.
Fullbacks Harvey Stanfel and Steve McAdams have been in the game for one thing, to block, and their carries indicate it.
Receivers Tim Harrison and Mark Turner have gathered in 48 and 40 receptions respectively for a combined 905 yards and four touchdowns.
Kicker Kendal Robinson has almost been perfect this season The former North Dakota University kicker is a perfect 19 for 19 on field goals (w/a long of 46) and 23 of 24 on PATs.
Punter Albert Sellers recently improved his punting average to 41.4 after being put on waivers twice and replace first by Sid Grimsley, then by Sam Turner before he got his act back together.
The defense led by linebacker Allen Henderson and defensive end Ebenezer Malamala, and cornerback Dale Long has be steady and dependable. The team's secret weapon is unarguably running back/return man, former Oregon State star, Jack Rozzelli.
Rozelli's offensive contributions have been minimal, no rushing yard and 34 yard on 5 reception. It is his kick and return yards that have been vital. He has 308 kickoff yards and 578 yards returning punts for a total of 886 all purpose yards.
He has returned two punts for touchdowns and has five fair catches on punts.
This particular statistic might not seem important, but his judgement on when to make the fair catch and when to let the ball go into the end zone has been exemplary.
How far this team goes this season and if it makes the playoffs, what kind of run it makes will depend a lot on how the offense and defense perform as well as getting a continued outstanding effort from it's special teams like it's kick returner.
