I don't think he ever did enjoy pro football. Too bad he has a social anxiety disorder, because he just made the Dolphins a 5-win team at best...not that I have much love for the Dolphins.

*cynical view ahead*i think part of his decision was drug based, i don't think he wanted to get tested anymore and risk the humiliation.*cynical view ended* but it is a sad day, as he was a great talent, who was on the verge of putting it all together, he had gotten the medication he needed, and i think he could of been a great player this year, its a shame

Ricky Williams RETIRED??? as in the dolphins RB??? what the hell? i gotta look this crap up. i thought he was good.

Thought he was good? He's one of the five best runningbacks in football. Now that he's retired, he's probably the best inactive football player in the world.

he is by far the best inactive football player. that is crap. he has cool dreads. he probably quit because he had to get a haricut.
skierdude44

July 25, 2004 at 07:23AM View BBCode

He actually shaved the dreads off because he was being pulled down from behind by them.

Ricky only averaged 3.5 yards per carry last season. He is a good football player but not great. Curtis Martin averaged 4.0 yards per carry last season and had just 64 yards less than Ricky even though Ricky had 69 more carries.

But Ricky has always killed the Jets so I am glad he is retiring. He is a pretty strange guy so it isnt surprising that he would retire so soon. He is only 25. I dont think his decision is drug related, I think it's due to his social anxiety disorder or whatever it is. He used to not take his helmet off when he did interviews, that is if he would even due interviews and I think that he just got stressed out due to his disease and decided that it isnt worth it. He already has all the money he needs and I guess thinks that it isnt worth putting up with the stress anymore.

Ricky Williams had less YPC because he had an absolutly horrible offensive line infront of him, not to mention that they had absolutly no passing game to help him.

It's funny that he retired right after the last decent RB signed with a team so now the dolphins can't even go after someone new.

Williams is a very good running back. If you watched him play he had low YPC because every single time he had the ball he was swarmed by defenders. The Dolphins had jack for a passing game(so that's 8 men in the box, every down) and a horrid OL that couldn't block anyone. Williams was getting better and better each year and might have been someone special this year. btw, he's not 25, he's 27.

On a side note running backs tend to retire early anyway. There's only so many times you can get slammed around before you realize it isn't fun anymore. Add in daily practices in the scorching sun and you have a very unpleasent job. It just isn't worth it to punish your body when you got millions of dollars.

Curse my typos

Tiki Barber also had crap for an O-line and didnt have a passing game for much of the year but still averaged 4.4 yards per carry. thats almost a whole yard per carry better than Ricky Williams.

Tiki Barber is also a different type of running back. He's evasive, like Barry Sanders was(not as good of course), so he can dodge defenders. Ricky Williams is a North/South runner like Emmit Smith, and those types of RBs need a good OL to be really effective. A big advantage north/south runners have is they almost always gain positive yards, so while they may not have a bunch of breakout plays they'll constantly move the ball down the field and eat up the clock. They're a good fit for defensive teams, such as the dolphins. They're gonna hurt without him

It amazes me how skier can cut down a workhorse like Ricky and laud a chump like Jeter with no apparent harm to conscience. Let's put Jeter in full pads and have every other linebacker in the league (and Roy Williams, just for good measure) deck him, I mean just body-slam him into the turf, and then see if Jeter goes soaring into the stands after a foulball. Actually, let's see if he can stand upright.

Barry Sanders is still the best inactive runningback, he could have still been playing if he hadn't retired 5 years ago. But anyway Williams was still one of the great runningbacks in the NFL. I think he probably would have eventually been thrown out for marijuana use, so maybe his decision was made partially so that his legacy wouldn't be having been thrown out of football. They said on ESPN he admitted to using marijuana a lot, and using some liquid to make it so that the test wouldn't work.

Barry Sanders in 36 years old and has been out of football for three years. At this point, TJ Duckett is a better back (no, I don't believe Sanders is keeping himself in playing shape since retiring. Good shape, certainly, but why kill yourself in training for a sport you no longer play?)
Unclescam777

Ricky Williams used marijuana medically for his social anxiety disorder but the NFL wouldn't let him use it so that caused a lot of conflict. Some people think that's why he retired but I still think it's because being a running back sucks after a few years. Besides, MJ is very easy to cover up for a drug test.

I bet if Barry Sanders came back this year he'd still be better than most of the RBs in the league, despite the fact that he has been out of football for so long. He was just that good. Imagine how many 2000 yard seasons he would have had if he played for a decent team.
Cubsfan13

Ok I'll give you that. I'll change it to Sanders is the best retired runningback in the sense that if they all worked hard for a summerand came back for a season Sanders would be the best.

Oh and if he had a decent quarterback... argh.. Scott Mitchell.. spiking the ball on forth down. And a decent o line. Damn flashbacks.

Fair enough...Sanders does have better instincts and a higher "ability threshold," if you want to call it that.

Barry really had nothing. Never have I seen a 1 man team like the Lions were for so many years. Some people think that's why he quit football, because he was tied up with a shitty team who wouldn't trade him or end his contract
Cubsfan13

July 25, 2004 at 05:04PM View BBCode

Herman Moore (WR) was ok to good, but that was the only other offensive weapon. On defense they did have Porcher and Ellis, who helped keep games close. It is amazing how they made the playoffs with that team.

Plus Jason Hanson, he was a really good field goal kicker back in the day.
