This was a wild day of baseball in the Frank Quilici League. There were just about any kind of game you can think of played in some locale.

Boston 4 Seattle 2

Playing the spoiler role in this one perked up a slumping Boston club. Daren O'Day not only went eight strong innings on the mound as the starting pitcher, but he chipped in with his bat as well.

O'Day's pitching line was 8 innings pitched, 9 hits allowed 2 earned runs, 3 walks and 9 strikeouts. He picked up his 4th win against 3 losses.

At bat he was 1 for 3, a run scoring double in Boston's three-run second inning that gave them a 3-1 lead at the time. Manny Macado hit a two run home run in that inning.

Everth Cabrera homered to give Boston it's fourth and final run in the fourth inning.

Kansas City 3 Minnesota 2

Kansas City scored three runs in the early going off Minnesota starter Mark Rockhauser and a solid performance by their bullpen made the lead stand up.

Lee Filson put the Scouts in front 1-0 with his 3rd home run of the season in the first inning.

Rockhauser surrendered two more runs in the third on a one-out double by Jeff Herman, a walk to Filson, and a RBIU single by Frank Morhardt.

Franklin Starr's one out single and Brian Rivers' two run home run provided Minnesota with their only two runs of the game in the 5th inning.

Rivers homered off Scout starter Mike Ryan who left with two outs in that inning due to a blister on his finger. Kerby Birrer was called upon for 2.1 innings of perfect relief, followed by Joe Borden and Tony Arrojo (3rd save).

Kansas City's bullpen walked two (Arrojo) but otherwise were perfect not allowing a hit. Birrer was the winning pitcher (1-3).

Washington - Anaheim....

Washington lost.
(19-5)

Mets 10 Freddies 9 (10 innings)

Wakefield hits three home runs in the comeback win..

Speer with walk off.

Mervin Causey and Mike Smith, two normally stalwart starting pitchers began this game opposing each other on the mound. They both finished it long before either anticipated or desired and watched from opposing dugout or the locker rom or someplace other than the mound.

After this game the Mets, tiring of their recent middle inning bullpen problems made two changes. The designated Frank McCracken for assignment and shipped Hal Marnie to AAA and recalled 30 year old right hander, Chuck Grilli, and 33 year old Otie Hargan, also a right hander. Both appeared in 1 game for the Mets in 1951 in September.

This game got off to a frustrating start for the Mets. With Causey laboring in the first inning Sutherland swung at ball four and instead hit into a inning ending double play (4-6-3).

Then Ethyl's husband Fred Mertz homered in the third with a runner on base giving Baltimore a 2-0 lead.

In this topsy turvy affair Smith and Fuller walked in front of Fuller who deposited a Causey hanging slider over the left field fence. The Mets scored four in the inning to go in front 4-3.

From the 5th through the 8th inning Baltimore hitters had a field day off Marnie, and scoring five runs.

Saverine got the final out in the seventh to stop the bleeding then.

On the flip side of the pitching woes was the performance of a couple of clutch hitting hitters.

Ray Wakefield went 3 for 4 with 3 home runs (8) and 6 runs batted in (20 Runs batted in for the season).

Wlson Rauntzhan 2 for 5 1 home run 3 runs batted in.

And Ron Speer 2 for 5 Home run .. walk off style.
