Discussion on Wheel Draft starting positions

July 17, 2015 at 12:54AM View BBCode

We need to decide the order that teams will pick during the 1st round over a 16 year period. Also, do we want to keep the 2nd-5th rounds based on the previous season's standings?

One way would be to use the previous season's draft position (2049), to determine it. Whoever finishes last in 2048, would of course pick first in 2049, but would then pick last in 2050 (the first wheel draft season). The team that has the 12th pick in 2049 (best team to not make the playoffs in 2048) would pick 5th in 2050.

Another way to do it, would be to hold a one-time lottery to decide the choice for draft position. Whoever wins the lottery would get first choice for what slot they would pick in during year one, and therefore the next 15 years as well.

I am ok with whatever is decided. In the BWL we took the current season's standings placed those in random.com and let that website determine where everyone would end up drafting going forward.

I don't think we should have other rounds different than the 1st. Going to be confusing enough for new teams when then join as a replacement as it is.

If we are using a wheel, my opinion is that it needs to apply to the whole draft, not just the first round. As the league commissioner, you can maintenance the draft order, but the only way to adjust a first round different than the rest of the draft would be through mandatory trades of 1st round picks, which would pretty much be a nightmare, IMO. :)

I think that the most reasonable thing to do would be to use the draft positions from the previous season, so that we know in advance how things are going to line up. If we don't want it to interfere with draft pick trades and we want to set it up now, we could use this season's standings to set the draft order, and then we would know a couple seasons out what our picks will look like.

I also really like the idea of a random number lotto, with the teams picking their initial wheel slot. that would create some buzz and excitement for sure!

Good point. I can only change the overall order, not just one round. So that solves that question!

Despite being a rebuilding team I would support the random. I just don't trust myself

I vote for random assignment to start the wheel.

The one worry I'd have is if we get 6-8 teams from the same league (NL/AL) all picking in a row, there could be certain years where all the talent (possibly top blue-chip type of talent) goes to one league. Maybe we could have it alternate league to league?

That's a good point Bill -- random order but alternate leagues to set it in stone permanently.

So a coin toss on which league goes first and two random number generators 1 to 8 for each league to determine starting point?

That, or you could do it with just one.

I think you'd have to assign the draft slots to each league after the first person chooses theirs, and then let the next owners choose the available slots for their league.

So if say if KC had the first pick (for example) and chose to get the #1 pick first, the NL would be locked into the even numbered picks. Say COL had the 2nd choice, Ken would have the choice of any even numbered draft position from 2-16.

I like this a lot.

Since we will be able to trade our 2050 picks after this upcoming OS + draft runs, may we determine the wheel draft order prior so we know where the pick is (and worth)?

I agree with that. Let's get this show on the road!

I prefer the random, then pick your draft slot. Anyone have any objections?

This seems to be the consensus from the group as expressed in other comments in this thread. Let's do it. Anything I can help with?

Are we doing the alternate league thing? I feel like that is too much regulation. We should leave some things to chance.

We are. Remember that this is the draft order forever. I'd like to see talent distribution as even as possible. Trades and draft strength year to year will affect that, but this helps keep the talent between leagues somewhat similar.
