Houston continues to have a hold on to last place in the National League with a dismal 12-30 mark, after their season went down the drain like dirty dish water with an enormously deflating eighteen game losing streak.

To their credit, the Gamblers have gone 6-2 since the streak ended one game after the club was sold to new ownership. Changes have been made and the team is well aware of the fact that the new owners want to make even more changes if possible and have a better season next year.

The first round draft choice is in the mix as it stands now and there are several veteran players who would help a contending team interest in beefing up this season.

The Gamblers took an early lead over San Francisco thanks to some wildness from San Francisco Harry Pool. Pool walked Charlie Loretta and Chuck Brunsberg and then hit Walt Seelbach with a pitch to load the bases with no outs.

Houston picked up the first run when catcher Jim Landrum hit a smash that third baseman Leo Fanzone knocked down with his chest and threw out Landrum as Loretta scored.

Leading 1-0 in the fourth, Loretta singled to left. Brunsberg hit a line drive that got down and past centerfielder Rex Fryman to the wall in left center. Walt Seelbach followed with another run-scoring hit, a single to left field upping the score to 3-0 Houston.

Seelbach was picked off second on a daylight play. a throw from the pitcher, Pool, to the shortstop, Pete Carty, cutting behind the runner.

The play cut short a potential bigger inning and energized San Francisco.

San Francisco scored four runs in their next at bat to take a 4-3 lead. Rick Cedeno drove in the first run with a single. Terrell Fisher hit a three run home run.

The 4-3 score stood until the top of the eighth inning. Charlie Loretta (four for four in the game, three runs scored, now batting .304) single and scored on a double by Chuck Brunsberg.

Brunsberg was caught stealing. Mike Scott came through with a run scoring double driving in Seelbach. Veteran pinch hitter Tony Dotson doubled to left field diving in Soctt making the score 6-4 Houston.

Vince Johnson with a chance at a save went two inning for his 3rd save of the season.

Houston returns home now to play first place Philadelphia in a three game set. Right hander Eric Haad (3-3 4.08) will go in game one and Philadelphia will send Eduardo Grob (4-4 3.88) to the mound.

PHILLIES 6 BROOKLYN 0

John Rogers (3-2) had a big day for Philadelphia. On the mound he threw a four hit complete game shutout and singled and scored in the Phillies big four run fourth inning.

Dick Kirkwood went four for four scored two runs and drove in one with his sixth home run of the season, a solo blast in the sixth inning. Shortstop Carson Caminiti drove in two runs with a single in that big fourth inning.

Pittsburgh 6 Milwaukee 4

A four run seven inning rallied Pittsburgh from a 4-3 Milwaukee lead and powered Pittsburgh to a comeback 7-4 win.

Tim Watson went six inning for the win surrendering ten hits and four runs , three earned. Red Rusie and Pete Hague came in from the bullpen with sufficient relief to shut down Milwaukee.

In the seventh pinch hitter Pete Duncan had a two run double off losing pitcher Don Adams (1-2) and Ozzie Haught triple driving in two more.

San Diego 7 Montreal 4

Julio Alvarez picked up the win as San Diego hit four solo homeruns J.Y. Denbone (7), Little Surf (1), Carlos Hernandez (3), and Tony Gwynn (7).

Dick Reimer had a two run single and a solo homerun (3) for Montreal.

A two run eighth inning that lacked any homers was big for San Diego. Alexi Ramirez singled in one run and Little Surf drove in another with a ground out.
