Colorado 1 St. Louis 0

St. Louis took game one of this series 7-5 in 10 innings dropping Colorado to 4-2 in extra innings. The Mockingbirds got back on the winning track with a 1-0 victory in game two. For the Colorado pitching staff (3.28 ERA 2nd in league) it was the fifth time they have held an opponent scoreless this season but they have only one complete game shutout.

Both starting pitchers, Paul Golden and Jim Jessee, pitched well into the seventh inning before any scoring occurred. Golden pitched 6.2 scoreless inning giving up a scant three hits walked none and struck out three. Golden did not figure in the decision and now has four no decisions in seven games started.

Jessee allowed one run on four hits but had constant problems locating his fastball and as a result walked five while striking out just two.

Colorado scored the game's only run in the seventh off Jessee without the aid of a walk although he had several long counts in the frame maxing out his pitch count even more. (113 pitches).

In that eventful inning Tony Shwieneke led off and had a eleven pitch at bat fouling off pitch after pitch (six consecutive after the count went full) before flying out to center fielder Mike Giles for the first out. Colorado center fielder Tom Smalley grounded a single up the middle to put one on with one out.

Willie Hughes pinch hit for shortstop Walt Johnson.

While Hughes was batting Smalley stole second base (7th stolen base of the season) Hughes then came through with a single driving in Smalley with the only run scored in the game.

There was no more scoring but a 1-0 lead is a tentative one when each runner getting on becomes the tying run. Denny Leheny who took over for Golden in the seven with two outs and got the final out of that inning with Jesse Mills in scoring position and continued on in the eight.
Rookie Walt Bishop appearing just his third game of the season (no at bats ) started a double play with a good stop of a ball hit by Hod Mowe. (6-4-3). Bishop also drifted far into left field to catch a pop up hit by Rusty Bilbrey.

Lance Holbert took over in the ninth and had a very good outing striking out two of three batters faced for his 7th save.
