After dropping the first two games of the final series of the season the Colorado Mockingbirds jumped out to an early lead, fell behind in the middle innings and then as they have often done this season stormed back in the late innings relying on a strong bullpen to win 9-7 and close out the season on a positive note going into the NLCS with the winner of a tie breaker playoff between St Louis who have come on strong over the final month and Los Angeles.
Colorado started Bob Wetteland to give him a shot at making the post season roister and the thirty five year old veteran from San Mateo, California went six innings gave up five runs (three earned) walked one and had five strikeouts.
Wetteland gave up a run on three hits in the top of the first inning allowing three straight one out singles to Jim Lee, Bill Kline, and Greg Smith before escaping by getting Paul Steinbach to hit into a 4-6-3 double play.
The mockingbirds came right back with a nifty three run bottom of the first to snap out of some offensive doldrums. They took advantage of some early wildness on the part of Atlanta pitcher Jay Bottarini.
Bottarini walked Jacinto Barraza who turned a walk into a double by stealing second (25th first in league) and then scoring the tying run on a single by Jimmy Stahl, starting at shortstop this game, one of seven position the valuable utility player has played this season.
Bottarini issued his second walk of the inning to Willie Hughes, another speedster for Colorado. Hughes showed off his speed and good base running ability by going around to third base sliding in just ahead of the tag on a single by Harold Parent that also drove in Stahl with the go-ahead run....3-1 Colorado.
The Braves had some life left and tied the score in the third inning. Stahl booted a ground ball by the pitcher Jay Bottarini, who had a good day offensively. Jim Lee did as well smashing a run scoring triple. Lee scored to knot the game up at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly by Bill Kline.
The Braves took a 4-3 lead in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Don Kilhullen then added on a run in the fifth when Bottarini singled and stole second base.
Bottarini was 6 for 42 this season (.143) with one RBI and that was his first career stolen base.
Bill Kline (four RBI in this game) drove in Bottarini upping the score to 5-3 Atlanta, who now could look for the sweep on the road.
Colorado had other plans. Bottarini's control deserted him once again in the sixth. he walked Hughes with no one out. Harold Parent singled. Hughes showing no ill effect from a troublesome ankle injury, raced around to third.
Parent stole second base (8th). Shwinieke grounded to short scoring Hughes. 5-4 Colorado....
Colorado nailed it down in the seventh when Parent hit his 18th of the season, a grand slam, off Joe Sanders.
Parent finished with five runs batted in in this game.
After Wettland's six inning departure the Colorado bullpen turned in some work. Thirty five year old rookie ED Conway pitched a perfect seventh inning and Dennis Leheny did the same in the eighth.
However Jay Wagner did not retire either of the two batters he faced giving up two runs on twio hits.
Alfonso Kim, the pitching staff's utility pitcher, who has been used in just about every role there is for a pitcher nailed down his second save of the season.
Kim was acquired along with Shwinieke and Wagner from Washington in July. he was up and down several times this season as needed appearing in 12 games (7 games started, 5 relief appearances) pitched 48.1 innings struck out 34, had a 2-3 record with a 5.59 ERA with two saves.

Templeton induced Emil Borgeois to hit in to a game ending double play (3-6-3).
Scott Coper had a big day with two hits including his 9th homerun with a man on it the sixth inning that built the Perfecto lead to 6-0.
Jack jones contributed two run scoring singles, an RBI single in the first and another in the second.

Shortstop Bo Welzer came up with the bases loaded and cleared them with a double of Los Angeles starter Brooks Bates.
Los Angeles came back to tie the game 4-4 in the seventh on a run scoring single by Dan Boyd and a single by Ray Brower.
Welzer, was one of the hitting heroes during the surge at the end of the season for St.Louis getting clutch hit after clutch hit was a perfect three for three in this game raising his batting average to .259 with 5 homers and 47 runs batted in for the season.
