With the completion of the minor league draft the Bud Black League off season nears an end. The 1952 season looms with a familiar face holding down the role of reigning champion of the National League.

The Brooklyn Buggy Puggys have owned first place for two seasons now. Brooklyn went 53-28 in 1950 and won the World Series with a dominating season.

The Pugs fell off by nine wins last season to 44-37, still good enough to take first place and dispatch the winner of a three team playoff for the Wild Card position between Montreal, Pittsburgh and Arizona.

Those three teams, along with Philadelphia, all battled the Pugs over the season and all have hopes of taking a step forwards in 1952 to dethrone mighty Brooklyn.

Brooklyn has a combined record of 97-65 over two season and the closest rival would be Montreal with 93 wins.

Brooklyn has two pitchers who have won twenty games for them over their two championship seasons; Marty Maas, 20-12 3.00 ERA, and Joey Stewart, 21-8 3.21.

Maas is a two time All Star. Stewart made the All Star team in 1951.

In the bullpen there is Pie Stoddard, Calvin McKay, and closer Hugh Bitker who has 39 saves over the last two seasons, was Fireman of The Year in 1950, and a two time All Star.

Brooklyn's nine win drop off was the largest in the league and enabled several clubs to close the gap and pressure them all season. Among them were Montreal, their biggest rival over the last two seasons, Pittsburgh and Arizona.

The biggest improvement of any club was made by the young Philadelphia Athletics who were in the race until the middle of September when they fell back. Still they were sixteen games better than in 1951 and have good pitching this season as well as some maturing players who could make them one of the most dangerous teams for Brooklyn if they overlook them.

Catcher John Jamieson is a two time Gold Glove Catcher who has hit 25 homers driven in 82 runs and batted .275 for Brooklyn.

The Brooklyn coaches will pick the best from veteran back up catchers Will Wegman, Jeff McAnally, and Blondy Howe to be the back up this season.

Curt Torborg, a serviceable first baseman is the incumbent. Brooklyn made a good pick up getting form Philadelphia player Mike Veras, who has made 26 career pinch hits with great success, as the back up. Veras was blocking young Adam Witte in Philadelphia and put on waivers.

Tommy Bowman, .261 26 102 runs batted in is the second baseman.

Dave Berry, .313 14 homers 74 RBI will man the hot corner and Don Needham is the shortstop after compiling a .300 average with 21 homeruns and 70 RBI over the two seasons.

Doug Rabb will serve as an infield reserve and complement Veres off the bench pinch hitting.

The outfield is a bit thin beyond two time All Star and former MVP Salomon Rothfuss (.352 21 homers 117 RBI). Nick McGillan, 18 75 .256, is in left.

Either Greg Tinney, Henry Grossman, or Allan Gingras, a drop off in talent from the rest no matter who gets the nod in right field.
