Building a winning attitude

This week two different teams publicly summed up their rebuilding efforts. San Francisco's owner voiced his satisfaction over his team's direction but J. B. Nimble of Philadelphia said earlier this week that ''putting a winning attitude into the heads of some of these players is like giving a sick child a douse of bitter tasting medicine.''

Nimble's attitude about winning has been simple ''win or else'' and the ''or else'' part of it has been the troubling part to many of the players. The thought of making a mistake and losing a game causing the team to trade you away has been a bit of a touchy subject.

Despite the owner's pessimism there have been signs of success lately. The ball club has won four of its last five games.

The last win was a 5-2 victory over Brooklyn. It was the first win of the season for starting pitcher Chris Jasper after four disappointing losses.

Brooklyn scored the first run of the game in the first inning. Nick McGillen singled to center field scoring Saloman Rothfuss who had walked.

Philadelphia came back to take the lead in the 4th inning. Gary McCollough singled leading off but was caught stealing for the first out.

Bob Tedrow launched his 7th homerun of the season off Brooklyn starting pitcher Gibson Wall tying the game 1-1.

Catcher George Blakely and second baseman Allan Burch both singled putting runners on first and third. Burch stole second. Steve Elmore's liner to left field was caught by centerfielder Rothfuss robbing Elmore. No advance by the runners.

Henry Perezchica lined a short to right center field that just eluded a diving Rothfuss's glove to get down for a two run double and a 3-2 Philadelphia lead.

Brooklyn scored a run when Jasper walked four consecutive batters in the top of the 5th to cut the score to 3-2.

Philadelphia answered in the bottom of the 5th. Roy Jones and John Pitkovec singled putting runners on first and third. McCollough struck out. Wall walked Bob Tedrow and was immediately replaced by Dave Howell.

Blakely fouled out to catcher John Jamieson.

Allan Burch came through with a two out two run single that boosted the lead to 5-2 and relievers Ryan Griffin and Maze Bosley iced the game with three and a third scoreless innings. Bosley earned his 7th save.

===============================

San Francisco defeated Pittsburgh 2-1 on a two run homerun by John Rios in the bottom of the 9th off Charlie Wright.
