Can no longer sign with Houston .....

He was never going to re-sign with Houston. He's going to the Yankees. The other bidders just have to submit their top offers so Steinbrenner knows how much he'll have to pay.

He's going to the Mets. That's where Beltran wants to sign. Read it in the papers in the morning.

I hope he goes to Texas and we trade off Kevin Mench for pitching. Than he will would undoubtedly not flop and lead them to World Series glory.

The Cubs offer was substantially less than Houston and the Mets offers. Unless they drastically increase their offer he will not go there. I think the Cubs offer was just an attempt by the Cubs to try and please Cubs fans by making it look like they made a run at Beltran when they really had no intention of signing him (unless someone took Sosa off their hands).

hm...too bad. The cubs , in my book, are a solid team with okay defense and hitting , and with superb pitchers in Prior, Wood and zambrano. They could be a playoff contender next year.

They will be a contender, as they were the last 2 years. Whether or not they make it is the question.

Houston had the best offer other than the Mets for Beltran, since they are out the Mets are going to get him for 7 years and about $17M/year

The Cubs may make a better attempt at Maglio Ordonez, he will be cheaper and will be able to play left. A problem with getting Beltran is that they would have had to move Patterson, a very good defensive centerfielder, to left, to please Beltran.

No, Patterson should stay in center and Ordonez to left.

Main thing is you gotta figure out who will be the best OF and get the best production out of him there.

Thats what I said, I think. Sorry if I was misunderstood. I meant that that was the reason it was good to get Mags, because there would be no controversy over who would play center, and that they would be able to stick him in left. If Beltran had come then they would have had to move Patterson to left. I was hoping they would sign Beltran, but I definately won't be disappointed if they gets Mags instead.

Either one would help the team

The Astros are really hurting because I believe this will severely diminish the
Chances of Roger Clemons returing for one more season.

I'd love to see Clemens come lace them up for Boston for 1 last year. I seriously doubt this will happen because he doesn't want to be away from family but it would be fun. He'll either play in HOU or not at al

Yeah, he accepted an arbitration offer from Houston and can only play for them or no one else.
