Does anyone agree with me that $7.5 million is an amazing bargain for this type of player ?

I think he's worth 10. You have to figure he is on par with Renteria

He is more valuable than Renteria considering his position. How many second basemen in the game today can hit?

The combination of Mike Young and Soriano is one of the better hitting short stop second base combinations in the league. Add Blalock and Teixeira to the mix and the Rangers have the best young infield in the bigs.

Why didn't they sign a pitcher this offseason ? There is no way they can catch up to Anahiem without some pitching help.

It is a nice infield. The Rangers problem as usual is that their pitching stinks.

The Rangers pitching wasn't that bad last season, especially considering they play in a super hitters park. Soriano is a bad defender and played poorly last year compared to his previous 2 years, but $7.5M for him is a ver good deal considering how teams have been paying a lot for inferior players like Cabrera.

Their starting pitching wasn't great. It was their very good bullpen that helped them. They need another starter, Rogers, Drese, Park, Rodriguez, and Young just doesn't make a good rotation, at least not in the AL West

The Rangers bullpen did very well last year but outside of an elderly Kenny Rogers, and Ryan Drese, the Rangers starting pitching was pretty bad

After watching John Hart the ten years in Cleveland the answer is simple. He believes you can hit yourself to a World
Series victory. He or his staff just is not good at evaluating which pitchers to sign when he does sign them. See Chan Ho Park, Jack McDowell, John Smiley. The only two he ever signed that were moderately successful were Dennis Martinez and Orel Hershiser. Martinez was good for Cleveland but Hershisers success was mainly due to the hitting of the Indians.

Calling Cabrera inferior is a bit of an overstatement. He is a very good defensive SS with a decent bat who should only get better.

And Soriano is a poor defensive 2B (a less important defensive position so that is not a big as being a bad defensive SS) with blinding speed and game changing power. Soriano has the potential to be a 40-40 man every year and like Cabrera he also should only get better. And considering that he is already better than Cabrera that means he will probably always be better than Cabrera. 2 years 7.5 mill is a pretty nice bargain for Texas especially considering that he could be the starting allstar secondbaseman for the AL.

Soriano is 29 and has been regressing for the past two seasons. It seems unlikely that he will get any better than this - who he is right now is who he is.

Orlando Cabrera has an OPS of .689 last year. His best year, 2003, he had an OPS .807, and in 2001, his 2nd best year, he has an OPS .752. For His career, it's .725. The Angles are getting a mediocre hitter for a lot of money.
