Bill Simmons, The Sports Guy

January 21, 2005 at 08:06PM View BBCode

Does anyone read his columns on ESPN Page2? They:

1) Are littered with references to Rocky IV and the Shawshank Redemption
2) Are filled with self-mockery
3) Promote an anguished pride in being one of the 18 remaining NBA fans on the planet

One of very few columnists who makes me laugh out loud.

Who doesn't read the Sports Guy? I love the Sports Guy, but his columns can get obnoxious on occasions due to the fact that
1) he's a Patriots fan, and a whiny one at that. If they don't get enough respect from the media, he spends 5 paragraphs talking about how Tom Brady has a 15-inch dick (well, I guess you'd like that part what with your man-crush and all that).
2) his references basically end at Rocky, Shawshank and the White Shadow. No movies have been made since about 1994, and no albums have been made since 1988 in Simmons' world.

But his basketball columns are always quality sports columns, not just funny ones, and he does make references that send me Googling, which is a plus in my book.

Things changed a bit after the Red Sox won, too: I could no longer silently laugh at him as he complained about how his precious Red Sox were doomed to failure.

I kind of like that he doesn't reference much contemporary stuff (except the Vibe awards), simply because it keeps me on my toes. He throws in a lot of Hoosiers stuff, too.

I manage to get through most of his articles. Sometimes there's just too much propaganda in them. I hate those two teams.

He even has a team named after him as well as the field they play on in the Johnny Callison League.

And take a wild guess in what city they play.

I think Sports Guy's a genius. The stuff he wrote during the '04 World Series was classic. I love Eric Neel too on ESPN. If you're into the Sox/Yanks rivalry from the Boston perspective, you might like Eric Wilbur (he also writes about the Pats etc). He has a Blog on Boston.com...

I've been emailing Simmons forever to try to get him to check out Sim Dynasty. No luck so far though...

Damn, that would be great publicity. Did you see the Page 2 article a few months ago about SportsClix, the tiny baseball figure game? We could triple our membership if he wrote something about us.

Yeah, I have an idea for next October. I'd like to get people to help me set up all the playoff teams with Sim Dynasty ratings, we'll simulate the playoffs, and post the results on a special page and see if some newspapers pick it up. Its the kind of stuff Simmons would write about too.

It would take a month for us to agree on the letter ratings for each player. :)

Yeah, that's very true. We'd need people with some good statistical minds that generally work well together.

I'd be willing to help (and criticize everyone's ratings for being incorrect :))

Someone remind me in September and we'll start putting it together for teams that have clinched. I wanted to do this last year, but was so busy with moving to Minnesota that it got lost in the shuffle.

That would be rad. We would need to get a head start on getting those rating togeather though, because I can only imagine the arguments

Yeah, we'd probably want to come up with a very detailed and organized system for dealing with disagreements.

I'm in. We should come up with an equation to rate players based on stats. Then, input last years stats to see where they are ratings-wise.

If we build the equation correctly, weighted for each major category, then it should come out correctly.

We can then run it based on last year's playoffs and see how close we came.

I am definately in. Schilling's not going to be A+ on my watch. :)

I'm well aware that Johnson is the better pitcher. But we can't let a Yankee be an A+ can we? :D

I'd put Bonds as A+/ A+/ A+/ A+, but of course, he's not going to make the playoffs this year either. :P

That would be dy-no-mite. I would be willing to help with ratings, especially if the Cubs make the playoffs. Carlos Zambrano A+++/A++ :P
