Clemens gets $18M!

One year, $18M. At first glance it is too much for anyone, especially a 42 year old, but Houston sells out every home game that Clemens pitches, so they are going to make considerably more money with him pitching. I doubt he will be as good as last year when he had a 2.98 ERA and was the NL's 2nd best pitcher but he should still be a good pitcher.

he wont be such a great pitcher, but if he fills the house, it should be great for the astros.

He's worth it. Also keep in mind, this is about the 5th time in his career that he's been done and won't be a very good pitcher anymore.

Anjo: the Astros arent a complete wreck. They could still cause some waves in the NL central with that pitching staff.

He also doesn't travel with the team on road trips. He flies in the night before he's scheduled to pitch and flies home after the game. This was part of the agreement last year in getting him to "un-retire".

Clemens brings much to the table with the young staff behind him and Andy. He fills the house as well when he is on the mound. Takes care of himself and puts his family first. This was the reason for the different flying rules and being allowed to go back home. My understanding was that he pays his own way in that not the team. He is like Nolan Ryan was at the end of his career. . .solid. He has a chance everytime he takes the mound to dominate the game. He shows no fear to the hitters that have been slamming other pitchers out of the park. So in the short of it. . .is he worth it? Depends on who it is facing him.

18-4 and a 2.98 era last year are very very good numbers no matter how old you are but they are even more impressive coming from a 41 year old. 18 mill is a lot for a guy who doesn't pitch very deep into the game anymore though, but with those numbers and the added revenue he brings in he is well worth it.

pitching wise, clemens aint worth it. He shouldnt have even won the damn cy young last year. he was clearly not the best pitcher. but astros will pack the house and get their money back and some. so they will get their money back and have a good pitcher. it looks to be a winning situation for the astros.

If Roger Clemens didn't actually deserve the Cy Young last year (and I'm not saying he didn't), he was at the very least one of the 3 best pitchers in the National League. So maybe 18 million is a bit of a stretch for any player, but Clemens earned that money as much with his arm as with his drawing power. And as I said before, it's a 1-year deal, so if Clemens does age badly this year the Astros will be off the hook for the money after the season's up.

No, he got it because he had 18 wins, and voters like wins. Don't get your panties all in a bunch over it - it was a defensible choice. Not the choice I would have made, but not a terrible choice either. I'll never understand why people get so upset about award voting. Get upset about wins and losses, about postseason triumphs and failures, not about silly awards which really don't mean much in the end.

I know that if I were a player drafted by the Devil Rays, got traded to the Yankees 8 years into my career and then somewhere down the road got to see the Devil Rays actually win the World Series, I'd be wondering what it would have been like had I not signed the big contract.

Well yeah, if you had never been part of a winner anywhere else. But Clemens won in New York, twice, so why would he spend any time thinking about the single title he could have been a part of in Boston?

I dont care the clemens won the cy young, its just a shame that the idiots voting didnt look at stats. they just saw some bullshit feel good story about him coming out for 1 last go of it. and it obviously wasnt his last go of it cuz here he is again. It just sad when the best pitcher doesnt get the pitching award for being the best pitcher cuz the voters voted with their hearts instead their heads.

clemens made the right choice leaving boston. he got the best of both worlds. a fat check and his ring. You're wrong - the voters do vote with their heads, and they vote for the stats. It's just that they value wins and winning percentage over everything else. They didn't vote for him because it made them feel good; no one feels good about Roger Clemens winning yet another Cy Young Award. Seriously, the vote was all about wins triumphing over ERA in terms of valuing a pitcher. I guess it's a shame the voters can't use more advanced metrics but in the end I think I'm glad that they don't. The Cy Young and MVP are fun because they ARE subjective and because sometimes they go to undeserving or less-deserving players, but if they just went to the player with the highest VORP or the most Win Shares then what would be the fun in that?

I can't help wondering if he'll be nearly as good this year. If he has an ERA of 5.89 they won't be selling out every time he pitches.

yeah but its just sad that when the best pitcher doesnt get the award for being the best pitcher. And they most not look that hard at wins and winning percentage. pavano and schmidt had better winning percentages with the same amount of wins. even oswalt had 20 wins over clemens 18. they voted for that feel good story of clemens coming back for one more season. johnson had beaten clemens in every aspect but wins. give johnson the astros line up and he wins 20 games easily instead of 16. but thats here nor there.Pages: 1 2
