I doubt many of you (if any) have watched any Giants preseason games, but if you have you've probably heard of this guy. I've only seen bits and pieces of their first two games but Jacobs has been very impressive. Jacobs is a rookie running back picked in the 4th round out of Southern Illinois. He's a gigantic back at 6'4" 260 pounds with a 4.5 40 time. In the preseason opener he had 12 carries for 73 yards. Last night he carried the ball 9 times for 38 yards. For a guy his size he has a tremendous burst and has enough speed to turn the corner. And he's a battering ram with the ball. Last night he was bowling over tacklers like it was nothing. He's been the talk of training camp and seems to have a great attitude and work ethic as well.
Due to his size (and his uniform number, 27) he draws comparisons to Ron Dayne but he is no Dayne. He's faster than Dayne and he's also a tougher runner. Last night he got hit by three Carolina defenders, lost his helmet, and still continued to push the pile and come up with a couple extra yards. Dayne used to run East-West and wouldn't utilize his size, but Jacobs is a North-South runner who uses his massive frame to his advantage and uses his speed as a bonus. I know it's only preseason and he's playing against second and third teamers most of the time but I have high hopes for him and apparently the Giants coaches do too. Right now he's looking at getting significant playing time during the regular season especially in third down and short yardage situations. I think he can eventually be a quality starting running back in the league.
