Revolving line up

July 11, 2002 at 12:52PM View BBCode

I find myself spending too much time setting my lineup to account for tired players. It would be nice to be able to setup 1-2 optional additional lineups for righties and lefties. But what would be even better is if these lineups rotated from day to day. This would allow for manager controlled resting of players without having to constantly message the lineup card. If the automatic part is too hard then just allow for the additional line up(s) and let the managers select them manually.

If the automatic part would reduce advertising revenue (since managers would spend less time on the web site) then make this an advantage for paying customers only.

Example
Lineup #1R vs. Righties
Lineup #2R vs. Righties
Lineup #1L vs. Lefties

In this case the AI would continue to automatically switch between righties and lefties (based on the opposing pitcher), but it would also rotate lineup #1R and #2R. Therefore lineup #1R and #2R would never play on consecutive days allowing for player rest.

What do you think?

What might be better and easier to implement is being able to indicate preferred backup roles. For each player on the bench, you could designate as "Backup 2B" or maybe just "Backup OF" or "Utility Infielder"; preferred defensive replacements could be marked with, say, "DR-8" or "DR-9", with the number indicating the earliest inning the DR could be brought in. Preferred pinch-hitters could be specified, too, either as "PH" or "Clutch PH", the difference being that regular PH's would come in when a pitcher's ready to go out, and a clutch PH would come in when the game is on the line.

Since these roles can overlap, there should be a way to designate more than one bench role per player; perhaps a separate column for the DR and PH roles, with utility players being selected in the same column as the player position?

I had another thought about this idea. What if you just had another option for Tomorrow´s lineup. You pick the date on the schedule (default is next game) and then you can set the lineup for just that one game. The lineup would default back for other games.

If you're going to go to all the trouble of allowing multiple lineups, then do this: On the schedule, next to the probable pitcher, have a drop-down that lets you select lineup Lefty 1, Lefty2, Righty 1 or Righty 2. By default, either select Righty 1 or Lefty 1 based on the probable opposing pitcher, or alternate between 1 and 2. But this could be good; I might want to put in a righty lineup against a lefty pitcher if, for example, the probable pitcher was a lefty reliever making a spot start, and all the other relievers are rightys. In this case, I know the starter isn't gonna last and I'll be up against rightys most of the game, so I'll want to be able to select a righty lineup...
