The gods favor the White Sox

October 26, 2005 at 05:37PM View BBCode

I doubt most peoples version of the 'modern' God would give two craps who wins the world series, but has become obvious to me that there is another force involved in this post season. There, I've concluded that the gods of old have chosen the White Sox to have their favor, thus dooming the Red Sox, Angels & now the Astros. I'm starting to believe the gods favor Ozzie Guillen & his whacked out moves. Check his office for freshly sacrificed goats!

How else do you explain Blum's HR, which I called. I also called out Konerko's Grand Slam, Podsednik's Hr. I've been on fire, even earning free round or 2 calling it out. Weird part is that I didn't call out crazy crap every play, so it really stuck out.

I wouldn't mind catching a replay of Game 3, as by the time we made it to the bottom of the 14th inning, I struggled to stay awake & sober enough to understand what the hell was going on!

I don't see how this isn't a sweep. If you can't win the game from the 9th to 14th with ALL THOSE runners on, you just aren't capable of winning.

Thanks Astros.

Interestingly, I called it too. I don't attribute it (or the White Sox success) to my or anyone else's relationship with the deity (if one exists), because frankly I hope if said deity exists, he/she has more important things to worry about than the Chicago White Sox.

But when the count went 2-0 I just had the thought: Get it and rip it. You can't walk Blum--it was going to be a fastball. Not an Oswalt fastball, either, so why not take a rip at it?

Anyway... The majority of the breaks have gone the White Sox way, but don't make too much of it. They've played better than their opponents and deserve to win. There's all this talk about small-ball, too, but they're not a small-ball team. As someone said, they just play good baseball. They pitch well, they have a good bullpen, they hit home runs, they draw walks, they bunt, they steal, they run the bases well, they execute hit & runs...they do everything. They're not a small-ball team or a moneyball team. They're just a damn good baseball team all the way around.

Lastly... If I had to bet on it, I'd say sweep. But I think the Astros may pull one out tonight.

This just further proves that the Cubs will win the World Series next year.

Well, trading Carlos Lee, a great stat hitter w/ a big contract, for a leadoff hitter, and using the left over money saved from trading him to get Pierzinski, Iguchi & El Duque had a lot more to do with it than luck. As well did the development of John Garland, the return from an off year of Mark Buehrle, and the reinvention of Jose Contreras as a stud. I think most bullpens tend to look better when they aren't being sent out every night wearing out there arms, so it is no surprise that their pen has lasted as long as it did this year.

Although, I still feel as a life long White Sox fan who goes to at least 10 games a year plus, that the gods are with us!!!

Sweep is automatic when dealing with a team that fails that bad to win a game. Honestly, I'm not an optimist, or a ra-ra guy. So, when I feel a win coming, it's not cause I'm a homer, or think a team is guaranteed to keep losing. But, the Astros have failed to show me they are capable of beating the White Sox, nor has about anybody this post season, so why would it change???

Jose Contreras is not a stud, he played for a few years with the Yanks and that was a few years ago. Don't say any of that reinvention stuff the guy was pretty good last year too and he's just getting older and coming into his prime. He couldn't handle the pressure of NY and that is all.

I would love to see the Stros win this just to see what happens to Brutus.... And somehow I don't think God really cares about baseball but just in case I always pray for the Yankees....

the Cubs are destined to win next year because the Red Sox broke a long drought last year, then the White Sox this year, then the Cubs next year.

The White Sox still managed to get fleeced by the Brewers in the Carlos Lee/Podsednik+Vizcaino trade even with the money they saved. Scott Podsednik isn't far above replacement level since he's a LF whose steals a lot but at a mediocre rate and hit a full zero home runs in the regular season. His ok on-base (~.350) doesn't make up for it.

Well, look at what he did healthy, he's playing at 80% on that hammy. Just elimate any steal numbers from past the All-star break when he got hurt, and you'll see he steals at a phenomal rate. Maybe he should have stopped running, but that's Ozzie style, he doens't care about stats, he wants the pressure on the other team. Podsednik has way superior defense, a better teammate, better overall speed. Again, it's when you compare the salary, & one on one's you end up with the Yankees type team saying this guy is better than that guy, but a Yankee team which sucks compared to a White Sox type team, especially come post season, can look better when you compare each one guy to the other.
Now, when you are not from New York, you come to realize there are such things as a budget, and a limit to your money, so you appreciate that a guy who frees up 6 million dollars, which is then spent on 3 players, is the same as trading for all 4 guys, plus a reliever whose stats don't reflect his talent, in Vizcaino; a guy Ozzie left out to try more than once when the bullpen was tired, and the game was over, inflating his ERA & WHIP. It's the reason he was on the playoff roster over McCarthy, as a reward for being a team guy, something the Carlos Lee type guys don't understand.

So in the end, Podsednik, Pierzinski, El Duque, Iguchi & Vizcaino for Carlos Lee. Hmm....gotta say that is a no brainer to me.

I'd do the Podsednik for Carlos trade straight regardless of salary anyway, but most people don't agree with me on that one. However, most didn't agree with me at the beginning of the season when I said the Sox were going to have a REAL strong chance of winning the World Series if they could get to the playoffs, which can sound crazy, but look how hard it was for Houston to make the playoffs, and they are in the WS. I've loved this team since that trade, and loved the pickups they made after, and loved that they DID NOT trade for crap except Blum at the trade deadline. And I think my opinion is being validated tonight, by one of the best records ever in the post season, something the Yankees did back in 1999, with a team that followed the lead of Jeter, a guy whose stats will NEVER equal his value.
Doug

PS To say they got fleeced is beyond dumb to me, and shows why so many are confused the White Sox are going to win the World Series. Well, all I can say to those who like Carlos over what the Sox got in return, is stay dumb, because my GM has finally gotten wise to it, and after a 100 years, it would be nice to get a couple more WS winners.

Don't take that the wrong way, I'm not calling you dumb, just think your one particular opinion is a dumb one, and thought I did my best to point out way. I'm not really into flames!

I'm not questioning that the White Sox were a good team, they are, and it's mainly due to their starting pitching, not their offense. Scott Podsednik is not the reason the offense produces, he ranks [url=http://www.baseballprospectus.com/team_audit.php?stats&team=CHA]8th among White Sox hitters in VORP[/url], along with 16th overall including pitchers.

The trade wasn't as bad as I first thought, but still not a good one, and the salary difference did not allow the White Sox to make every one of their moves, though it helped.

And once again, the element of defense doesn't come up, because it doesn't show up in those precious statistics of yours.

Scott Podsednik is not a great defender, nonetheless.

Well, I didn't see much of him this year. He made some awesome plays against the O's when he was with Milwaukee. He didn't wow me in the playoffs, though.

Fact is, the White Sox won their division, won 99 games, and won the World Series. People who don't believe in their style are going to attribute that completely to luck--I don't buy it. The season is too long.
