Season 3/4 Gone-some more thoughts

August 24, 2003 at 05:23AM View BBCode

Back by demand. (From one person anyway). More numbers and observations. The season is only a game or so shy of 3/4 gone. NY remains comfortably ahead in the AL while Washington has the upperhand in the wildcard race. Cleveland and Kansas City are hanging tough 7GB the Nationals. In the NL Philly and Chicago are fighting it out for 1st. Brooklyn and St.Louis are hanging in the wildcard race, but it will be tough to catch either team in the remaining 42 games. Matt Brown (NY-AL) remains the MVP favorite. He is a legitimate AL triple crown threat as he leads both leagues in HR and RBI while leading the AL in BA. Carlos Jones (WASH) continues his dominance on the mound and is the heavy favorite for the Cy Young Award. He leads both leagues in Wins, IP, SO, CG, and ERA while being tied for the lead in Shut-outs. He has an excellent chance to capture the pitching triple crown of :Wins,ERA, and SO. Now for the "if they continue at this rate" projections. Matt Brown: 55 HR (He has fallen off as he was on pace to hit over 70), Homer Miller (DET): 205 hits, Brown: 128 RBI, Brown: 127 Runs, WIllie Mays (NY-NL) and Billy Hayes (CHIG-NL) 39 SB. More later. a team with as few representatives as any in top stats, and all star votes has led with the exception of a few days the nl all season. if philadelphia can continue to hold off chicago's faboulous young team than it would be hard to argue that they are truly the greatest team. afterall isnt winning without any one or two athletes standing out over the rest of the team the greatest reflection of what that team is really all about.

Nate, so far you have my vote for the team that has my number. My team has an abysmal record against the domiNATEors so far in this 1950 season. To date the NY Knights are 3 W and 15 L in 18 meetings. I feel more than "snake bit" when we play against you. I have observed all the trades (retooling) that you have made and still haven't won a series against the domiNATEors. Nevertheless, I am still gunning and hoping to sweep you just once this season.
NY Knights --> still 17 GBL

i knew that there had to be a few teams i was doing well against because when i see a series coming up against the windtalkers i have come out on the losing end. i really find it hard to believe that the draft gave him that much young talent. luckily for the really active members of this league the teams that where handed championships on draft day have seldomly looked at their team more than 2 or three times a week. i am looking forward to seeing how this next draft turns out. ive stockpiled a little youth throughout the season, but unless their just going to explode into stars there hasnt been much improvement. than i see these teams with 19 yr old b sp in the minors. blows my mind.

I hope you have taken 3 real young players like 19yr olds and put a 5 in coach points on them. If you do this for 3 or 4 seasons, they will have deveolped nicely over that period, but not much will seem to happen in one short season. The Amateur draft will probably bring you more young players to deveolp, so plan on 4 or 5 seasons to be competitive. And don't get tricked into trading your talent to league leaders or you will just become their farm team.

Nate and Jack,
:(:D;):o thanks for the comments on drafting 19yo and putting max Coaching Points on them. I have also noticed that the improvement process throughout the year thru Game Improvements is slow. I am hoping that playing some of the younger players in some of the games will make the improvements faster during the off season run. Pretty much I have some younger guys 22yo to 26yo but haven't figured out how the improvement curve works. There was a MB thread on "possible Age Shifting" for player development but that seems like more then a few SIM seasons from becoming a reality, if at all.
Sooo, I guess I will have to figure out and operate in the context of the current SIM structure.:(:D;):o Thanks for the incite..!

As to trading your talent to the league leaders, if you are not going to be in a position to contend next season or two and you have a 35+ year old player, I believe you should trade him. Not saying this because I am a "league leader" but because, as I understand it, players begin to retire around 34 or so depending partly on age, playing time, and performance. Get something for him while you can. Any experienced GMs out there want to offer their insight into the retirement /declining skills process?:)

Based on some of the discussions so far , I got curious about the Jimmy Wynn League Current Age Distribution...Here are the results, one might compare to determine whether a team is older or younger based on this information
[List]
[*] _____ SP____RP____PP___ALL___%
[*] Num._186___130___415___731
[*] AGE========================
[*] <20yo__6_____6____18____70__9.5
[*] 20yo_8 _____1____14____23__3.1
[*] 21/22__7____10____42____59__8.0
[*] 23yo_14_____3____17____34__4.6
[*] 24/25_17____14____49____80_10.9
[*] >34-39_29____20___37____86_11.7
[/List]

>> These are meaningful or (less) stats depending on your point of view. The pitcher's tend to hang on longer as a percent of the total sample then the position players.
>> There are almost as many players under 20 as there are in the 24yo/25yo range.
>> However, as expected the skills of the 24yo/25yo are better or more established.
>> Some teams drafted heavily for youth...but can all youth be developed in the minors.
?
Reality says a lot of minor leaguers never get to the "BIG Show". However, since SimDyn is based on 1950s, there were some very good minor leaguers who couldn't crack the Major Leagues..??:o:o:P:P:cool::cool:

Just some other thoughts on how this season has progressed. again just a set of numbers to ponder until the playoffs and series are played.

So far 86 players have been exchanged between teams in trades. Some players have been involved in more than one trade.
I have tabulated the following from the News and may have miscounted or missed a trade or two. I apologize, in advance if that is the case:
However, the 86 players that were traded were involved in 56 trade transactions.
The[color=blue]"BIG time traders"[/color] were:
NYA-12; BRO-8; BAL,PHI-7 each;
[color=navy]"Helping the economy"[/color]
CIN-5; NYN-4; PIT,DET,KC-3 each;
[color=blue]"Standing Almost Pat"[/color]
WAS-2; BOS,CHN-1 each;
[color=navy]"Building from Within"[/color]
CHA,CLE,MIL-[color=red]0zero0[/color] and MIL is apparently gone... :(:mad::(
Anyhow, just some info mull over.

Crusader, very interesting statistics. I didn't realize that i had made that many trades. I don't think that i'll be as active in the second season, but ya never know. I would like to know if the GM's of CHN-BOS-CLE+CHA don't want to trade or don't have the time? It will be interesting to see how this league develops over the years.:cool:

BIG Apologies to St. Louis :(:(:);)

:(:(:);)
In my haste to tabulate, I made an error in the boxscore. My apologies to my fellow GM in St. Louis... However, Jeff, if you do want to make a trade, I am sure there are more than a few other GMs who would be happy to oblige, I understand that NO Blevins players are on the Trading Block..
What about the other Cardinals??

Crusader,

Thanks for the update! :D

My minor league shortstops and catchers are up for trade. I am looking for either pitchers or draft picks.

They are high contact hitters.
