the soccer thread, from here til infinity...

...or something like that.

I figured I'd start this shit now, before the weekend of games.

Tonight Arsenal de Sarandi plays America in the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final. I have to figure out if I'm going to watch this on the computer, or drag a couple people along with me to a Mexican restaurant or some shit to watch it.

Tomorrow there are a few good games...Arsenal v Aston Villa, Juventus v Milan, and Espanyol v Barcelona ( I don't remember who is the home team in any of these games, so they're probably in the wrong order). I'm pretty sure all of those games are either on Gol TV or FSC, for those that have those channels. Also, Benfica plays FC Porto, which is a pretty good game and one which could feature Freddy Adu.

Sunday..the only games I think I'm interested in on Sunday are from the last day of the Argentine Apertura. Lanus and Tigre are the only two teams with a chance at the title at this point, and Lanus just needs a point to lock it up. But they face Boca Juniors, so it will be difficult. I think the Lanus-Boca (again, don't remember where its being played) game is on FSC, either live or on delay..maybe the Argentinos-Tigre game as well, as it is a couple hours later if I remember correctly.

I always manage to miss the Man City games on FSC. I guess I'll watch that Milan/Juve game.... ESPN has made a weird choice for Tuesday with Milan/Celtic, usually they only show English teams in Europe.

I think that is one of only two Champions League games this week, so that is why they are showing it. The other one is Shakhtar-Benfica, which is at that time because games in the same group have to be simultaneous in order to prevent any sort of colussion. They got moved up because Milan has to take part in the Club World Cup in Japan starting the week after that.

The final games in most groups take place the following week. And those MFCS at ESPN better show Marseille-Liverpool.

Well, I guess my question about Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi will be answered shortly. (If you trust that award, that is.)

I won't be catching any games tomorrow since I'll be at work pretty much all day, but Sunday is going to be bliss.

When I left for work Villa had just gone up one, so I was excited to get back and see if they pulled it out. Alas...

I don't know the details, but I might watch the replay tonight.

The Juve/Milan match was one of those quite exciting 0-0 draws.

(There would be scorn, but I'm guessing this thread will belong solely to the three of us.)

That was a good game. Villa piled on a decent amount of pressure in the second half, but couldn't get anything.

I was flipping between a few games from 1-3:30 (central). Marseile could only manage a draw against Lille..I had to follow it on a matchtracker, as the closest I could find to a feed for the game was a ligue 1 simulcast which switched between all the games going on.

Adu got on for the last few minutes for Benfica..almost scored within his first 30 seconds on the field, but they lost 1-0.

Messi already got an assist against Espanyol..1-0, and I imagine that halftime is over by now.

In Brazil, Corinthians got relegated after a 1-1 tie with Gremio and a 2-1 win by Goias over Inter sealed their fate. There will be cries of collusion, as Goias got 3(!) chances to take the penalty that put them ahead. The first two were saved, but the referee claimed that someone had gone into the box early both times. Corinthians are the second best supported club in Brazil, supposedly with 30 million supporters, so for them to go down is pretty amazing. Just a couple years ago they had the likes of Tevez and Mascherano playing for them, and had won the league. But, thus is the crazy-ass world of South American soccer.

Lanus tied Boca 1-1 to win the Apertura in the Primera division de Argentina. Santos beat Pumas 4-2, but lost 5-4 on aggregate in a quite exciting game in Mexico. That means Atlante will play UNAM in the final.

Tevez and Mascherano played in Brazil? That seems wierd. I know next to nothing about the South American leagues, but is the Argentine league really that bad that two of their guys would go to Brazil instead?

Starting in 2005, a company called MSI heavily invested in Corinthians. They financed the moves of Tevez, Mascherano, and others, and Corinthians built up a really strong team. But it wasn't a normal situation within South America, as usually Argentine players play in Argentina and Brazilians play in Brazil, until they move to Europe. Other South American players who are good enough usually flock to those leagues.

The Brazilian league is only slightly better than Argentina's, and as the smaller clubs from Argentina have started to become become they are now almost the same.

its funny to me how mascherano has flopped comparatively to tevez. I thought they would both equally do well. I'm glad they both got away from west

count a fourth one in on soccer threads :-) . i'm a huge fan - look at my team LOL.

Arsenal (the british one) is absolutely unbelievable this year. It's scary how young they are. Unless you're an Arsenal fan like I am ;-) . Anyone see Flamini's goal?

Hah...one of Reading's strikers, Leroy Lita, got a decent amount of press a little bit ago when a sex tape surfaced. Unfortunately, it was the most noteworthy thing he's done this season. He's been pretty shit.

Mascherano's not really a flop compared to Tevez, they are just different types of players. I think Mascherano's doing an admirable job playing Gattuso for Liverpool, and I hate that team.

yah, i hate liverpool too. the 05 champions league was the first one i got to watch, and i was/am a big Milan fan. I dont know how sheva missed that volley in the 2nd extra time, but i still get sick when i think about it

huh, i didnt realize mascherano had started as much as he has this yr *looks at soccernet.com* . I've always liked him. I love these argentinians that come over and out-work every other player on the pitch. Half of why Messi and Tevez are so good is they dont ever give up on a ball, and they're so fast. And they finish well. And, and... LOL

I'm looking forward to this transfer window. I'd like to see Adriano end up in the Premier League. Hes built for it, and his time at Inter seems up. How much you want to bet he ends up at real madrid tho

Count me in as your fifth. I'm a big Colombia fan, so I follow most of the SA leagues as well as any of the European clubs that have Colombians on them. There seems to be a few all over the world, but France seems to be the favored league for developing young Colombian talent. We have Guarin (St. Etienne), Pino (Monaco), Sanchez (Valenciennes), Renteria (on loan at Strasbourg from FC Porto), and Perea (Bordeaux) currently playing in Ligue 1.

Seņor Juan Pablo spent some time in the premier league, LOL. Man, he tore up MLS didnt he? What do you think about him? He wasn't too shabby at Aston Villa...

To be honest, JPA was never the same after the knee injury and I don't think Villa ever surrounded him with any players to tap into his potential. He got a raw deal because of the record transfer they paid River to get him. I guess they expected a Henry type of player for the money they paid, but JPA could never live up to that sort of hype. Not many strikers could though. At river he played with Saviola and Aimar upfront. Villa never had anyone who compared to that duo during his tenure and both he and the team suffered because of the lack of creativity. Other then that 1 great year he had, I can't really make an argument for him and agreed with O'Neil's assessment that it was time for him to go. I will go as far as to say that I would cringe at the thought of another young Colombian going to play in the EPL. Not because it is a bad league, but because I don't think the EPL is the right league to develop a young talented South American. The language barrier and culture shock a player goes through is immense and the pressure to win in the EPL doesn't suit it to be the right league IMO. The culture shock is less in La Primera, Seria A, and Ligue 1 where the smaller clubs are able to give lesser known S Americans a real shot at developing. When I say lesser known, I mean S. Americans other then Brazilians or Argentinians.

i agree with you. even tho he wasnt stellar, angel has definitely been one of the better south americans to play in the EPL. What you speak of, is why i hope ronaldinho never ends up in the EPL, for his sake. Cute (cheeky as a brit would call it) football doesnt work in the EPL, which is what a lot of those young brazilians et al. want to play. and the EPL is so rough, they get destroyed physically while theyre learning to play true football. It's why tevez is so good. he has decent touch, and finishing abilities, but his strengths are blazing speed and strength like an ox. But, he was at Cotinthians till he was 22 or 23.

Which, its funny, because for all that being said, cristiano ronaldo did just that- learn to play real football in the EPL. And, sir alex is trying to do the same thing with Nani and Anderson. Maybe sir alex just has the magic tough or something :D

[ learn to play real football in the EPL.]

Surly you jest? Cheeky football wins world cups, real football in quite a long slump. In fact real football wil be missed at Euro 2008, no?

if you consider England the only team in Europe that plays tough, physical football, than, yes, you'd be right. I dont think thats right tho. Italy plays VERY physical football, and they're the current WC champs. The names known in italy are Gattuso... Nesta... Maldini... all strong tacklers and excellent defenders. And really, none of the Italians can dance like Ronaldinho, Robinho, Joe Cole - oh wait, Joe Cole wishes he could play like that

You're right to a certain extent tho, i mean, the Brazillians have won 5 world cups, havent they? :P

Eh, I guess there's a balance. I just enjoy it when all these guys do their cute crossovers and such, only for a defender to take the ball with one good tackle, and leave the dancer on the turf. That's prob cuz i was a defender in high school, and hated it when i got beat like that. LOL
:P

I really really really really hope that Sergio Aguero ends up with AC Milan somehow. Do you know how amazing the combination of Alexandre Pato + Sergio Aguero would be for the next, oh, 10 years?

So how many of you play SM? The Pato reference is a dead giveaway or you're a real football nut boba.
