Most useless new phrase of 2003?

January 02, 2004 at 02:44PM View BBCode

We had a bunch of new terms added to the American lexicon last year, most highly annoying, but which was the most annoying of all?

Shock and awe...so Hollywood. I can't stand it when war has a cool factor. Monkeypox is pretty annoying too.

"shock and awe", I havnt heard that one before.

It reffered to the tactic the US Military used in the opening stages of the war with Iraq. If you saw any of the coverage, the first bombing raids used these huge bombs that sent fireballs a hundred feet into the sky. They had film of it on TV the night the war started. The military reffered to it as "shock and awe," because the intention was to shock the Iraqi people into submission... They figured if they could prove, with big huge explosions, that they stood no chance, they'd roll over.

The press just ate it up...I found it rather annoying.

spider hole isnt a new one, it has been used for a while, i think that is what they called the hole that the veits had in the vietnamese war.

govonator is cool, not annoying.

bennifer, agreed, most annoying

never heard trans-fat

shock and awe was stupid, but not THAT annoying.

metro sexual? is this what homos in cities call themselves now? that is possibly more annoying than bennifer.

trans-fats reffers to trans-fatty acids, which are in foods (in saturated fat, I believe). I read an article in Newsweek about this last month...apparently they come from perservitives that are used in pre-packaged foods...Oreo's and such forth. Apparently they seriously clog your artaries, so there's been a healthy amount of press about them.

Moneypox--a skin ailment people in the Midwest picked up from unusual pets, like Prarie Dogs...

Flash mobs--A short-lived fad amoung college kids, where groups of people would show up in a public place and do something weird for no apparent reason. For example: Fifteen people would show up at a bookstore...they'd all go to the magazine rack and pick out a magazine, then look at it (as if they didn't know each other) and then all simultaeneously exchange magazines... Stupid stuff like that.

Embedding--refers to the military's practice of "embedding" reporters in military units, which--accoriding to critics--causes those reporters to become part of the units, thus skewing their reporting in favor of the military

Metro sexual--not a damn clue.

got it. if the reporters were scewing their news towards the military, then we mustve lost the war, considering how bad the press has been

Metrosexual is the term they came up with for straight men who primp themselves as much as gay men supposedly do. It was big when Queer Eye became popular and was used to describe every heterosexual man who got his nails done or paid 200 for a haircut.
Whole thing is pretty damn silly...

oh yeah. i saw the south park episode on that. turns out the queer guys from queer eye for the straight guy are aliens. guys that gay just piss me off. my sister has some weird thing where whenever she sees something like "queer eye for the straight guy" or "special: guys who act REALLY GAY" or "MTV cribs of really gay guys" well im making most of them up, but anyway, whenever shee sees them, she cant change the channel. also she became friends with this gay guy at our school who is a total asshole/total pothead, and the only explaination she can give about why she is his friend is that he is gay.

What? Are gay people like status symbols for your sister? Weird...

But you know, they say that gay is the new black!

...and I have no idea what that means:puzzled:

i still say bennifer is the most annoying. both are extremely untalented. those flash mob things sound like something happy would do.

fatty acids make up fats (they are the building blocks). i dont know what makes trans-fatty acids different from regular ones.

I'm not sure either, I never was interested enough to read the many (many) articles that were written about it over the year.
All i know...

Well that is a good thing, right?
Besides, I eat enough of that stuff and my family won't have to pay to get me embalmed when I die, i'll already be well preserved...:)

It's win win!

Not a good thing. Trans-fatty acids are what keep a five year old Twinkie soft. Now you've gotta figure, anything that can keep a Twinkie soft for five years is probably not designed to be ingested. Most likely, they're what's causing all the sudden heart attacks among baby boomers, who have consumed more trans-fats than anybody. Word to the wise: Eat junk food now, die of heart attack later.

You know, Bling-Bling was a candidate, but I heard it last year plenty, so I didn't think it belonged, but if it was here I'm sure it would get lots of votes.
