Czech, anyone, comments?

In his last ratings he suggested maybe I should have held on to Cudworth, instead of picking up Dent. Consider this:

My last three series were against Washington, Baltimore and Cleveland, so this is a pretty solid test case.

Over these nine games the Beer Bellies allowed 25 runs, or 2.77 runs per game. I haven't bothered to figure the ERA. But against those three, any pitching staff would be happy to come out allowing 3 runs, I reckon. I don't think Cudworth is overly missed in that regard.

Yet, the Beer Bellies were only 5-4 over this stretch. Why? Because in 7 of the 9 games we scored 3 or less runs!

Now look at two names', my 3 and 4 hitters, numbers over those nine games:

Dick Lyons: AB-27, H-4, BB-4, HR-0, AVG-.148, OBP-.258
Bill Dent: AB-35, H-5, BB-3, HR-1, AVG-.142, OBP-.210, HR-1

So for the last 9 games I've gotten a combined performance from my 3 and 4 hole hitters of: AVG-.145, OBP-.232, HR-1

Why?

As mentioned before, NONE of my hitters have been performing worth squat against ANYONE ever since I settled my pitching rotation, and bull-pen where it is now. Why in God's name this should affect my hitting, but I don't know.

Bear in mind, that at the time I made my last pitching moves I was second in the league in runs scored (only behind Washington). Look at us now!

In any event, none of this makes a case for keeping Cudworth. I would say Dent has been dissappointing, but in fact, there MUST BE SOMETHING MAKING MY ENTIRE TEAM UNDER PERFORM at the plate- so one could argue I'd have EVEN less run production without him right now.

The only joy I'm getting is that I was tied with St.Louis for errors made before trading for Dent. Being able to move Lyons to third has seen my FPCT sky-rocket... which is important when you score less than three runs per game.:o

Suggets Czech rethink the Cudworth deal. If I could trade now, the last think I'd be going after is pitching.

Rod Cudworth is leading the Majors in ERA and WHIP. A guy like that just shouldn't be traded for anyone(such as Dent, one of many middle infielders with 20+ homers), except Blalock or the four or five other guys in his tier.

Your offense has definitely been ice cold since Aug. 1. I had a similar drought in July.

As I said to Milwaukee, batting a crappy hitting catcher(Uros), regardless of his defensive abilities, next to the pitcher's spot, is a surefire way to not score in 33% of your innings and kill a lot of your offensive rallies.

I'll break it down Letterman style...

10. Neal Hess is still in the minors.
9. Overreliance on your 3 or 4 main hitters(Fenwick, Lyons, Dent, Sarmentio,) with little offensive contribution from the rest of your team.
8. Jimmy Riconda is on your active roster
7. Was, Bal, and Cle are quality teams with quality pitching trying to stay in contention.
6. Dick Lyons has D+ health and is tiring as the season is going on. At 23 yrs old he is more prone to slumps and hot streaks.
5. Ralph Fenwick is only hitting .269(that's about .230 in real life.) In the American League, that's a terrible average.
4. Blondie Spencer is injured, so Cheif Corridon and Ray Heredia are getting ABs
3. Your team has little footspeed and is underagressive on the bases.
2. Ray Heredia is batting leadoff and is PLAYING IN THE FIELD.
1. Your first basemen have combined to hit .247 with 5 home runs.

Let me break this down like George Bush:

Fenwick is JJ Hardy, OK? Any offence I get from him is gravy.

You have a point about Hess.

You have a point about 1B production. You'll recall I tried hard to get Hunyadi...and it's not just because I'm playing from Budapest.

If you love Cudworth so much you should have packaged a deal, somehow.

My pitching is better than the other three teams you mention.

My team does not get thrown out on the base paths.

You say I hit a "slump".... I hope that is true. Before the "slump" I was number two in run production, even with Heredia (you contradict your own advice about him, he's fast. You even tried to trade for him). As far as who should play "in the field", I think you should outsource that bit of commentay, seems funny coming from the Reich.

Maybe if you told me why Dent has been batting .150 since I fixed my pitching staff, I'd be more open to this analysis. Oh and Lyons too.... oh and Fenwick oh and Sarmiento, and maybe why Uros is what he is? Yeah, tell me that.

First of all, I NEVER, EVER, EVER, never in 1 million years, tried to trade for Heredia. Having a Hispanic last name does not automatically make you slick. His speed is OK(A-), but he has F range and a D arm. I would never even consider using him.

Dent and Spencer are your only position players with any speed whatsoever.

I don't know why your "sluggers" haven't been hitting lately. Their season totals are still respectable. Perhaps they chose to struggle randomly all at the same time. I still think you made too many deals, and the lack of long-term consistency came to frutition. I think you might have overmanaged, LaRussa style. Other than that, mabye Bill Dent just chose to start sucking.

Look at my run totals in July. No one on my team was hitting the ball out of the infield. And I have a bunch of HR/RBI guys.

You ask my advice, and then you rebut me when I give you my honest opinion. I only pointed out things I saw as potential blocks to your offense. I'm too busy with my own club.

No need to get pissy... If I didn't value your opinion I wouldn't ask for it.

I agree that everyone went random with me at once on the batting.

Also, I don't think you'd of thought that I traded too much if you had landed either Harts or Cudworth.

OK, just watched my game. Now I'm pissy.

How in hell can you say I shouldn't have traded Cudworth for some hitting?

getting cudyear for dent was not easy deal to offer...my relief pitching left something to be desired, so i was looking for top caliber stud. as it turned out, i ended up with a formidable trio in the pen( dont forget pacella).

perhaps i waited too long to pull trigger on dealing. was not getting production from hitters that i was expecting more out of early in season.

in any case, i sure picked the wrong time for a big losing streak...rest assured, i will put best effort the rest of season....i know i wont make playoffs, so i'll have to settle for next best thing....taking someone down with me!

as for you, enocelot.....i hope to run into you again! your reports were quite enjoyable to read!

ok, im a little lost right now, but i hope your not putting my pitching (the peas) in that group of three in your post. (cause my pitching has been solid all year an i think i have 1 of the best pitching staffs in the league, oh yeah my defence isn't all that bad either. funny how those 2 things go hand in hand.) i dont score many runs but the for-mentioned tells you why i'm in the hunt. also man, u need help in your bullpen. aaaaaaahhhh its horrid. how can you say you have a better pitching than anyone??

btw- tig. czech is the one that posts the power rankings. lets give credit where credit is due.

hey santiago has been playing "slick" for me. that one's for u czech. lets not be prejudice

I don't have better pitching than anyone, except two of my starters. My bullpen is sort of a mess. But I'm strong in other areas. I can't believe I just got swept by the Flubs.

I know exactly why the Peas are in the hunt and I totally respect that. STL and PHI are two teams with different constructions.

My bullpen is going to be a little worse without the off days. I'm also rotating in and out nine pitchers that I called up and have been grooming all year. My pitching would look a little better, but with all my pitching injuries early in the year, I had to call up guys before they were ready and it ruined my whole plan to train middle relief. Anyway, now, giving Wheeler and Downey the brunt of bullpen innings should be a passable solution. I'm not as worried now as the playoff picture in the N.L. is starting to take shape. I think wether STL or PHI wins Home Field Advantage might be the last question.

I was looking at Garry Harts early in the year to platoon with Solano Lopez, but I just wound up going with Dave Colangelo of the White Sox. Enceolot wanted too much for him. Garry Harts's skill set is virtually identical to Matt Corvinus and Julio Cesare, so acquiring him would have left me with a glut of streaky outfielders with no footspeed.

I came off a sweep of Cincy, and then I got swept by the Cubs(Flubs, as they're known in STL.) It was rough. The bears always show up to play my team.

Although Santiago routinely kills my team, I think he's well below-average as a position player, especially a corner outfielder and a leadoff guy. But if he works, I guess....

Finally, I do love Rod Cudworth. Cuddy and Myself are getting a Civil Union in Vermont this offseason. We're adopting a Korean baby.

If you'd change Hunyadi's name to Janos, you could adopt him as a Central European orphan.

Americanizing or Latinizing historical names makes things more realistic, for me at least.

How do you know about Janos Hunyadi?
