First Baseman Errors

The enhancement list has an item about First Basemen making too many errors. This is a problem for me on my Mickey Mantle Washington team. It is hard to understand why my 1B player leads my team in errors.

Last couple of errors:
1) Chuck Rau reached on a fielding error by Primus Fox on a throw from Joe Snyder.

2) Jim Muich reached on a fielding error by Primus Fox on a throw from Jack Norman (this one was costly since we ended up losing the game by 1 run)

3) Ramon "The Gun" Hernandez reached on a fielding error by Primus Fox on a throw from Luke Maddox.

4) Rodney Shinnick reached on a fielding error by Primus Fox on a throw from Jeb Stuart.

In fact I'm almost positive that almost all of his errors involve taking a throw from the pitcher while covering 1B. My first baseman has 16 errors (10 more than any other player on my team) and we are only 54 games into the season. At this rate he will have 48 errors by the time the season ends.

What player attribute controls how often a 1B player drops the ball? Range doesn't seem to be applicable.

Player card:

In my league there are 6 1B players who would lead my team in errors if they played on my team. However, my 1B leads all 1B players in errors.

It is indeed range that determines fielding errors, the most common cause of 1B errors. Arm controls throwing errors.

This is definitely a problem -- 1B make way too many errors. Until it's fixed, make sure your 1B has a pretty good range. He's probably more important defensively than your SS.

Aye. A huge step for my team was putting a LF with A range at 1B and junking the 1B with C range. In 1950 I had more than 30 errors at 1B, when I made the change it dropped by more than half that.

I try and find the player on my team with the best range to play at 1B. I can't remember the last time I put a true 1B in the lineup.

IMO natural 1B are useless because they can't even transition to other positions well. You would be better of finding a middle infielder with B or better range. Check out Roger Dotter who played 1B for me vs. RHP in 1951 and 52'.
