Tupac was a lot more complicated than you think

January 09, 2004 at 01:18PM View BBCode

I read an insightful article about Tupac Shakur recently. It listed several facts about him, all of which are pretty interesting, whether you care for his music or not...
Did you know he once said that one of his favorite all-time songs was the theme to Les Miserables?

Never heard of any of them, and I find myself to be a huge Pac fan. Every fact but the last one seems possible, he was a pretty serious dude and into the arts and theater, but never heard he got shot in the scrotum, and I have been researching him on and off for the last couple years.

I don't lie!
Everything I posted was true!
In 1994, two men armed with 9-mm pistols robbed Tupac of $40,000 in jewelry in the lobby of a New York recording studing him five times, once through the head!
He was rushed to the hospital but checked himself out the next evening out of fear for his safety.
One of those five bullets penetrated the scrotum, but didn't cause any real damage, lucky him...

Plus, I won't poke fun at Tupac, I respect him. I didn't always like his music, but not because it was bad. He was a true musician, not like Chingy and crap like that. REAL music...

A lot of people that don't like rap liked Tupac. Songs like To live and die in LA, Shed so Many Tears, I ain't mad at ya, and Changes... he was far more versatile in what he talked about than any other rap music I've heard.

Rap was created out of stories of life and what's going on around them, so other rappers that give rap a bad name with cop killers, drugs, murder, rape, and violence aren't entirely wrong when they defend their music with that line. But the difference between them and Tupac was that Tupac went with all stories, both stories of the violence and the stories of losing your friends because of it. He's the only rapper, in my opinion, that really stayed true to what rap was and really is about.
And Skier leaves off what I think is a fairly important part of that quote, "See the old way wasn't workin so it's on us to do what we gotta do... to survive".

It's the truest sign of real music, when it easily transends genre, and finds fans where least expected...

i remember hearing about tupac being shot in an ny recording studio in 94, that wuz wut sparked the biggie tupac battles. i didnt know that he wuz shot in the head and scrotum though. that reminds me of his and biggie's song runnin' if u listen to it u here biggie talking about when he heard pac wuz shot and he said his first reaction wuz "again" and he basically thought big deal he'll pull thru but when he died big said he couldnt believe it cuz pac wuz so tough. i dont think any rapper can ever come close to him. he wuz great.

He had a very interesting life....
Tupac served time in jail before he was even born!
His mom was pregnant with him while doing time for allegedly conspiring to bomb NY police station and landmarks!
She was a Black Panther...
How could anyone be surprised in how Tupac turned out? He wasn't putting up an image, that's for sure, he was very very real...

i just read some interesting things about him too. one thing wuz that his mom believed in education and when he got in trouble as a punnishment she made him read the entire new york times. he used to write poetry and love songs when he wuz young and didnt really get into rap until he wuz 15.his mom actually published some of his poetry in a book called "the rose that grew from concrete." there were also some interesting quotes on the site. one that i remember wuz "people try and criticize me for the music i make but they really know nothing about me." he wuz also very into acting. he enrolled in a performing arts school when he wuz about 15 in baltimore. he said he loved it bcuz his mother had moved him and his siblings around alot and he wuz lonely cuz he didnt feel like he could fit in bcuz he had lived in so many different backgrounds and bcuz he didnt have a father. he said he finally found friends there, most of them were white and that wuz the first time that he had come in contact with white people and said that he had believed alot of bad things people said about them before but that completely changed since he went to that school. he is also named after an inca king. this proves happy wrong even more. he used to say that tupac wuz just another thug rapper and that he faked his death and i would tell him that he needed to actually learn something about him before he made those accusatons cuz pac is real and he would do anything as dispicable as that.

Tupac was no thug, if he had lived he probably would have been a teacher of young minds and would have made even more of a difference in many young peoples lives.
His original name was Tupac Amaru Shakur, if I remember correctly.
Tupac Amaru was the name of a freedom-fighting 18th century Incan warrior whose body was torn apart by Spanish imperialists. It meant 'shining serpent'.
Shakur means 'thankful to God' in Arabic.

proof behind my claim

January 10, 2004 at 12:30AM View BBCode

Tupac Shakur was born Lesane Parish Crooks in Brooklyn, NY in 1971. While still a small child, his mother changed his name to Tupac Amaru after an Inca Indian revolutionary, "Tupac Amaru", meaning "Shining Serpent". "Shakur" means "Thankful To God" in Arabic.

one of the greatest muscians ever. no matter wut genre u r talking about. imo the greatest ever but i dont think most people would agree with that, but im sure most would put him up near the top. very very said that his life ended so soon. i think that when he wuz alive people failed to realize how great as a person he really was. and still there are a lot of misconceptions about him. i have no doubt that he would have been the most influencial celebrity of my generation if he wuz still alive and would have been one of the great teachers of my generation. when i think of tupac i think of hard work. look where he came from and look where he ended up. and no i dont mean dead, i mean successful. and also it proves that even if u come from the inner city ghettos u can still make a difference, be smart, be successful at whatever u want to do.

Besides, anyone concerned about the spelling skills of a group called 'Gorillaz'?
