When Colorado began their six game sojourn through Brooklyn and St. Louis the general feeling was that a split of the six games would be respectable. Now that scenario would be a disappointment after the way the club played in Brooklyn against the first place team sweeping the series outscoring Brooklyn 14-7 and shutting them out over the last 19.1 inning of the series with a no-hitter tossed in there in the middle.
Thirty seven year old veteran Harry Cheney, from Hendersonville, Tn., started for Colorado and got any thoughts of a second straight no-hitter out of the way early by giving up a lead-off single to Damain Consolo.
Catcher Larry Garrett threw out Consolo stealing as Brooklyn failed to score in the first inning.
Bunk Naylor started the second inning off the same way with Brooklyn's second hit and did steal second base. Naylor advanced to third on the first out, a ground out to second by Blas Barnes. Bill Lucas, one of the big RBI men in the league, walked and Ed Cullop hit into a inning ending double play started by shortstop Walt Johnson.
Walt Sampen beat out a bunt for a single to start the third but Garret got him stealing as well.Brooklyn had only one more hit off Cheney in the game, a one out double in the seventh by Gerald Good.
Cheney went eight innings four hits no runs one walk and six strikeouts to go 5-4 on the season.
Lance Holbert gave up two hits in the ninth but nothing else as he garnered his league best 23rd save.
Runs came at a premium in this game. Colorado staked itself to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as rookie Julio Bolton doubled to left field and scored on a one out single by Tony Shwineike.
Tat lead held up until the fifth inning when Tom Smalley and Shwinieke opened the frame with two consecutive hits. Chick Marberry struck out the next two (Parent and Lynn) but could not get Walt Johnson who doubled driving in Smalley.
2-0 Colorado.
Colorado had nine hits and five walks off Marberry but managed only two ruins because they struck out seven times, lost a runner stealing as well and hit into one double play.
Colorado next plays St Louis to finish up the road trip. The task in game one of that series to extend the winning streak will be a stiff one. Ed Alexander (8-4 2.37), the St. Louis ace will start against Colorado's ace Paul Golden (3-4 3.79).
Jim Brandon (4-4 3.74) and Ken Hoffman (2-0 0.55) will pitch the final two games for Colorado and they will face left hander Chuck Darrow (3-2 6.02) and Benny Fehring (1-2 3.60).
St Louis, winners of nine of their last ten, took care of business with a 4-3 win over outmanned Atlanta.
Los Angeles 4 Montreal 3 and Pittsburgh kept pace with St. louis with a 5-3 decision over Houston.
