Colorado mounting desperate September drive.
The Colorado Mockingbirds have experienced good times in the recent past, winning the World Series in 1950, making the playoffs last season, but time has taken its toll on the core of those two teams and the roster has changed quite a lot this season alone.
Gone is All Star second baseman Bob Lynn (traded), utility man Jim Stahl (traded)starting pitchers Harry Cheney (inactive), Jim Baldwin (inactive), Bob Newkirk (traded), Horacio Escobar (minors) and catcher joe Fiene (injured).
The new group has shown signs of coming around of late. The Mocks as they are now calling themselves won the final two games of the Montreal series after Jim Baldwin (2-5) was tagged for the loss in game one Arthur Fox, one of the new faces, and the 1951 Cy Young Award Winner, had a superlative outing going 8 innings (2 hits 1 run) to go 6-3 for the season. The Montreal run came early in the game (first inning) and Colorado rallied in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead that they never relinguished.
Willie Hughes reached on an error, a single by Tony Shwinieke, a ground out and a two run single by Tom Smalley gave Colorado a 2-1 lead.
An eighth inning double by Frank Jestadt and a run scoring single by Willie Hughes tacked on the third run.
In the finale of that series the 1951 Rookie of the year Kenny Hoffman went eight shutout innings (1 hit 2 walks) to improve his season's record to 5-4.
Hoffman gave up a lead off single in the first inning to Jim Beltre. Beltre was erase in a inning ending double
play. he allowed just two walks for the rest of his time in the game.
Hughes' fourth inning double and Tony Shwinieke's run scoring single accounted for the game's only run.
