Washington is off to a 18-7 start the first month of the season which has result in then owning a one game lead over Los Angeles. The Senators have played eight series this month and are 6-2 having won three series in a row going 8-2 over the last ten games of the schedule.
Washington began a three game series with Toronto that will close out the first month of the season.
Washington took game one 5-3.
Stubby Clements went six and two-thirds innings to move his season's record to 4-1. Clements gave up seven hits was charged with three runs (all earned) walked four and struck out five.
Wes Conger and Dave Gibraltar worked two and a third scoreless inning of relief with Gibralter earning his third save.
Joe Bottarini took the loss (2-3). Bottarini went five and two-thirds innings, allowed four runs on eight hits walked four struck out five and gave up two homeruns.
The first was hit by Washington catcher Tom Ragland in the second inning with one out and no one on base putting Washington ahead 2-1.
Left fielder Larry Maxie hit Washington second in the third to give Washington another one run lead after Toronto had tied it up in the bottom of the second. Washington added a second run 9n the inning on a single by CF Gene Hutton, a stolen base and a run scoring single by Bobby Moreland that just got by diving second baseman Joe Delahanty putting Washington up two; 4-2.
Joe Leiter tripled leading of the Detroit third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ron Long to cut the lead to one; 4-3.
Washington added on an insurance run in the 8th inning.
Pinch hitter Ricky Beck walked with one out, stole second base and scored easily on a double by Jay Tolson.
Clements unraveled in the seventh. With one out the right hander gave up a deep fly to right hit by Leiter that was caught at base of the right field the wall by Larry Bilardi, then walked Hasagawa before being replaced by Wes Conger who retired Ron Long on a routine fly ball to Bilardi in right.
Gibraltar took care of the final two innings allowing one hit and fanning three for his 3rd save.
