There was some robbing (I don't think they showed the replay, or if they did I missed it, but it looked pretty good at regular speed.)May 03, 2009 at 04:17AM View BBCode
Crosby would have scored if he'd put the puck in the left side of the net, instead of right down broadway. It was still a fantastic save.May 03, 2009 at 08:19PM View formatted

I don't have Versus, and for some reason Comcast isn't showing it.May 05, 2009 at 01:42AM View BBCode

When ESPN cut ties, the NHL sort of had to scramble to find a TV deal. So it's not like there's some grand conspiracy - the lost season forced the league to basically start from scratch with the public. But it still sucks.May 05, 2009 at 01:55AM View BBCode
i saw it. good game, and ovie just kind of took it away from them at the end.May 05, 2009 at 04:06AM View BBCode
It was kind of funny watching Fleury after Ovechkin's third goal -- he kept whacking and kicking at the hats on the ice as he skated in a circle near the net.May 05, 2009 at 03:30PM View BBCode
I have versus but am not fully back into hockey yet.May 05, 2009 at 03:38PM View BBCode
Labor issues in professional sports aren't really between players and owners, they're between small market owners and large market owners. Players simply join with the latter.May 05, 2009 at 03:46PM View BBCode
there's a great deal of truth in that statement. it applies less to the nhl i think than the rest of the big 4 though. in the absence of a real US tv contract, the nhl is really gate-driven. the kings are in a 'big market' but they're not really a big market nhl team, if you see what i'm saying. the nhl is really more a battle between teams that draw and teams that don't. pre-cap toronto was almost always in the upper echelon for nhl salary spending, but no one is calling the blue jays or raptors a big market team.May 05, 2009 at 03:52PM View BBCode
Market size is a misnomer anyway, but it's entered the lexicon, and it's what people understand. High revenue/low revenue is perhaps a more accurate way to put it. But anyway, the principle still applies. When teams are making money, they're happy with the status quo. When teams are losing money (or making less money), they use labor issues to attempt to increase their piece of the pie. The NHL found themselves in a situation where too many teams were in bad financial situations, and they ended up losing a season.May 05, 2009 at 04:00PM View BBCode
salaries are higher now than they were then, so i don't really see where the lockout helped them much. the canadian teams were helped out a lot more by the uptick in the canadian dollar than anything the salary cap did for them. the only real benefit to the lockout, so far as i can see, was the 'new' rule interpretations that increased the speed of play. and there's no real reason why we needed a lockout to get that done.May 05, 2009 at 04:12PM View BBCode
