1) Greece loses to Argentina (by any margin)
2) Nigeria beats South Korea (by any margin)

That's really all they need. Greece, South Korea and Nigeria would each have 3 points, and Nigeria would advance on goal differential, with (at worst) -1 to South Korea and Greece's (at best) -2. Kind of crazy that a team can go into the final round of group play without a point and still advance to the knockout stage.

The other, potentially more convoluted tiebreak scenario involves Greece beating Argentina and South Korea beating Nigeria, giving three teams 6 points each.

Let us just assume that "1)" is going to happen, and forget that the possibility of Greece beating Argentina exists, OK?

I am not ruling out the possibility that Maradona does something insane like subbing out his goalkeeper for an extra striker, or testing out a 1-1-8, with himself at midfield.

(Also, a draw by Greece is a real possibility, given that Greece will have considerably more to play for than Argentina. And that would eliminate Nigeria.)

That made me laugh out loud. But is was a nervous sort of laugh. The sort of laugh that is used as filler when a combatant in a debate is left without any sort of comeback whatsoever. A tentative, lilting sort of laugh ...

Heh. So awesome.

(Argentina were pretty good, yea. I don't know if we're really going to learn anything about them in this group, because none of these teams ever were likely to really test their defensive capabilities, but they're as strong as you'd expect in attack. Which is an improvement over qualification, I guess, where they often looked disjointed.)

((Greece seem to be...just so slow, really. I can't see them dealing with Argentina at all, if Maradona plays even a vaguely sane eleven. I mean, honestly, if it weren't for the situation, where Greece has more to play for, I could see Argentina threatening that 6-0 scoreline from the match against Serbia & Montenegro in '06.))

(So France & Mexico is another 0-0, right?)

There have been too many goals today to expect otherwise. But, I don't know. I think Mexico's style, where they're unlikely to sit back in defense and could very well give France a lot of space to run into, may play into les Bleus' hands. I could see Ribery causing a lot of problems, especially if Mexico continue to send their outside backs so far forward in attack.

Or not, maybe Mexico will keep 65% of possession and France won't be dynamic enough to do anything about it other than defend.

does mexico have players now, or actors like they featured when sorryass blanco played?
(Eric)

Sorryass Blanco still plays. He has to be the slowest outfield player in the world.

(They're pretty alright, they have some nice players, but they're very predictable and vulnerable in certain areas.)

((I don't think they're as theatrical as they used to be, so I guess less...actory.))

you're joking me now, blanco cannot possibly still be playing.

(but it confirms my suspicion. blanco's father knows where all the bodies are buried. he has to.)

What Argentina love? I didn't see any of that. All I saw was an acknowledgement that they are significantly better than the rest of their group and that it is unfortunate.

A draw between Mexico and France does nothing to ensure Uruguay moves on; quite the opposite, actually.

oh yeah lolz. A draw means that uruguay basically has to draw/beat mexico to move on to the next round.

but either way, the tiebreaker matters a lot if either team wins... mrow.

(go mexico)

We do not root for Mexico, even against the French. We root for sinkholes.

(Craig's coming correct with this. Mexico is actually a legitimate rivalry. That's probably the most relevant thing about US soccer, sadly.)

(a draw gives South Africa a slight chance of going through, right? Uruguay would probably end up in the quarterfinal (they'd finish first and win in the second round), but whatever. I can sort of see France losing to South Africa.)
