Game 7 (simon) -- 27 pitches (he did give up 3 home runs in 1.1 innings pitched though... but this is why we need to keep the stupid pitchers in when they arent sucking.)

It's still only the first month of the season. I'm from baltimore and as big a fanatic as anyone. But I have to remember....historically, they start off strong then fizzle at the all-star break. So lets pick this back up after the all-star game and see where they are.

i think the red sox are right now wishing their pitcher didn't go out and give his all for the Empire of Rising Sun. and the orioles are probably fairly happy that Guthrie took it kind of easy in the WBC.

i guess all these guys could go old school nine innings every game, and save the bullpen for something. what that something is, i don't know. the beauty of this armchair quarterbacking is, hindsight just can't miss. the actual manager of the team has to, you know. make decisions that involve unknown outcomes that result from the actions of actual human ballplayers, and not numbers in a freaking column.i think the red sox are right now wishing their pitcher didn't go out and give his all for the Empire of Rising Sun. and the orioles are probably fairly happy that Guthrie took it kind of easy in the WBC.

im not looking in hindsight, im mentioning a trend, Im suggesting that in the future, you at least let your one not totally worthless starting pitcher pitch 120 pitches so that your bullpen isnt worn into the ground. So far only one pitcher has pitched even 100 pitches. and he did it in 4 innings. No one has gone past 6.

trembley used to be the bullpen coach. he can't stop thinking in terms of getting those guys in the game maybe.

i mean, last year, all he could think about was why can't somebody, anybody play shorstop (and hit, you know, at least a little bit). this year he has moved on to something different.

They keep starters on heavily restricted pitch counts in Spring Training. I can't speak for the Orioles, but i do know the Rockies keep their potential starters limited to 2-3 innings.

guthrie was in the WBC, and didn't get the work he would have gotten in even regular spring training. before the US team was eliminated, they (the orioles) asked for him back to try to get him ready for opening day.

at the beginning ,yes, but most (i had until now thought all) teams will have them stretched out to at least 6 innings by the end. what good is a starter that go only go 3 innings on opening day?

2. Jimenez, 107 pitches, 7 IP

I think it might depend more in pitch count at that point. A shame in a way, really. It used to be that some pitchers didn't really loosen up until they had thrown around 90 pitches. Nolan Ryan's fastball used to get faster the later into the game he got. Bad comparison, as Ryan is a freak of nature, but there it is.1. Cook, 55 pitches, 2.1 IP - Obviously ineffective

they also have a lot of arms down in the bullpen. they might even be trying to show some of them around to deal them. mcphail is running the team now. maybe seattle has something else he wants to steal.

Maybe he is thinking "if i get 6 quality innings out of my starter, i better take him out before he screws it up", and if the guy lets 9 runs in during the first 2 innings, screw it, just keep him out there because it doesnt matter anwyay.
But Guthrie should pitch 7-8 every single game that he isnt getting shelled. I mean, he is the only one in the rotation who legitimately is more than a fringe major league player.

A bullpen led by George Sherrill is better than the rotation? The Orioles do have bad pitching.

they have some pitchers down there that have had some sucess, sarfate, johnson, ray, to name a few of the younger ones. they also have some quite nice pitchers in the minors. they have some veterans, like baez, jamie walker, that can get folks out. and sherrill isn't a bad reliever.
