It definately needs adjusting. Part of the problem is in fonts, trying to find a font that is tall and narrow and installed on most systems. I am using Impact for now, but I am afraid many Macs may not have it. But yes, I agree that shorter and a bit wider would match TV better.
One other thing is the TV version disappears shortly after the snap. I could do that here too, but I think its constant disappearing and reappearing would be distracting.

First Chris let me apoligize I didn't mean to bring up such a nit picky type of thing. It was that I don't like that they use it on TV because it is just there... not that your art work wasn't good enough (its obvious its still early).
I do agree with the directional arrow... good point.

No, please, comment on anything.

Pun intended? :)

What about using Arial (narrow) for the font? It is almost universally used and meets your specifications.

looking great!
A few things caught my eye.
The number graphic for the player to the far right on Kickoffs is technically offsides or over the 30 yard line.
I don't really like the message that a receiver broke a tackle before we know the pass was complete.
Passes to the end zone read "at the end zone". Probably better worded as "in the end zone" or "at the goal line"
I was doing the Oakland/Memphis game. In the first half there were about 10 or more deflected passes. That's a bit high. The average NFL game has about 9 total. Philly led the league averaging a bit more than 6 per game and the Rams were last averaging a bit more than 3 per game. If there is something in the sim that the defense made the pass imcomplete, instead of being a deflection every time, maybe make it "great coverage by Joe Blow".

I was thinking about ccondardo's comments about how it doesn't "pont anywhere"... the marker is centered on the line of scrimmage on TV because the first down line may not be visible. We, however, see the whole field at once. So it does make sense for the tip of the arrow to be on the first down line. So (for now at least) I have changed the thickness (thanks Happy), the font (thanks Hamilton) and the position (thanks ccondardo).

That's a bug in the play encoding... good catch!

"Pass is completed" is always the last message because it is the message that appears when the "detail" messages are turned off, but I could add a "catches" detail line. I'm trying to not go too overboard in detail but I want people to watch the games and if better detail will accomplish that than I'm all for it. :)
We should probably start a separate discussion on "How much detail is too much" at some point.

Yeah, that's starting to bug me too. The template for those lines is "...at the *lineball*" and then the box score page replaces *lineball* with the yard line number, except sometimes the yard line is in the end zone, so I'll have to find a way to make the "at the" be intelligent and not part of the template.

Good idea. The deflection is to indicate that the pass is incomplete due to action on the defender's part and not a quarterback or receiver error. Part of the problem is that, due to the limited play engine I currently have in place, the defenders are covering the receivers closer than they will in reality... so I need to adjust this but I will have to wait untill I have more defensive plays in place. But I like the idea of having a separate message for incompletes due to close covereage that aren't actually tipped away.

Cel, I think you can put the lines in the proper order (for example "pass complete" before "broken tackle". I mean, if you really want to get detailed, you could just have a bunch of check boxes for what people want to see, but it needs to be in the right order. if broken tackle was before completed pass, I wouldnt want to read broken tackle. otherwise I would.

Have you coded in penalties yet? The Oakland/Memphis game has a kickoff go out of bounds, which means the ball should be placed at the 40, instead of the 20 like it did. I know it doesn't happen all that often, but it can be a real game changer (just ask the Panthers).
Other than that, not noticing anything too egregious (besides the 16-yard punt that would never, ever be returned unless your name is Devin Hester).
Love the on-field graphics, reminds me of Tecmo Bowl.

Are you talking about the kickoff at 6:57 in the 3rd quarter? That kickoff goes out of bounds in the end zone which is a touchback... if it had gone out of bounds before entering the end zone it would have been spotted at the 40. There are some out of bounds punts; those are spotted where the ball goes out of bounds.
On a related note, Memphis has really bad kickoffs in that game because their kicker has relativly low kicking power.

The graphic is a lot better Chris! I think that no matter where the line of scrimmage goes it should stay the same size and length.. in case someone brings up that it should get shorter and such.
It looks really good.

I traced that one back, that was a bug... thanks! (A return IS possible, but the chances should have been lower.)

There is now a "Pass is caught" message at the point of the catch. There is still a "Pass is completed for xx yards" at the end of the play to show the total yardage for the play.

This actually turned out to be a bug in the reporting, the game engine was always writing that the tip attempt succeeded even when it wasn't. It was supposed to not write anything if the tip attempt failed but the pass was incomplete, now it will write a "(receivername) is prevented from catching the ball by (defendername)."
