yeah, i don't have the stats in front of me, but you're exponentially more likely to make an out after taking the first pitch for a strike than you are to earn a walk. at 0-1 the advantage to the pitcher is larger than you seem to think.

Ok, go ahead and explain this one to me deke:

What are the odds of getting a walk if you hit the ball fair on the first pitch?

i don't believe he was talking about that situation (grin).

(it is kind of ironic the two examples you cited, vlad and ichiro, both have more walks this season than wieters. which indicates, if nothing else, that is wieters wants to be a "walky" guy, he is seriously doing something wrong, no?)

I don't see how this can be true. Ichiro is hard to walk because he swings at everything. Is there a stat that can prove this? Admittedly, my evidence is anecdotal, but I get 18 Mariners/A's games on my set every season. I've seen hundreds of Ichiro ABs over his U.S. career.

yeah, i was wrong (there are stats for such things, its on fangraphs, Z Swing or some such thing.)

you are, as usual, talking about two different things at the same time and trying to pass them off as equivalent. they are not.

I like that Deke's exchange student is Charlie Chan.

as a matter of fact, his name was koichi kanazawa. i don't know what his career average was, but it was well below the mendoza line. he used to wear some kind of vinyly warm-up suit. squeaked when he walked.

I said if you take a first strike (note, not first pitch, doesnt matter if its 0-0, 1-0, 2-0, or 3-0) you are more likely to walk (not saying its necessarily a good thing, im just saying you walk more). I mean, swinging and missing, fouling the ball off, and taking a strike are equivalent, so the only time it changes is a fair ball, in which case the odds of a walk drops to 0%. Cant hit a fair ball if you dont swing, so the odds of walking goes up.

This is another one of those things where eventually no one's going to have any idea what either side is even arguing for anymore, isn't it? Those are the boringest.

I think Joe Mauer's my new man-crush, seeing as my favourite Jewish baseballer is now gone the way of the Bonds.
