Just played Miami in Beta twice in the last few days. He´s using a new, almost 100% shotgun were the main running play is a shotgun draw and they are averaging 36+ points per game, not too shabby.
The first game we allowed 30 points, but 10 came directly off strip sacks we surrendered inside our 10 yard line early in the game. So 30 was not horrible, especially considering that overall Glenn threw for 452 yards on 34 of 49 with 1 pick. He completed 23 of the 29 passes under 20 yards, 10 of 18 on 20-40 yards and 1 of 2 plus 40 yards. They ran 21 times.
I blitzed 22 times while while playing about 65-75% pass defense. My defense did not key-in a single time.
Seeing this I went to a more medium zone defense (mixing in some man and deep zone) in game 2 and blitzed a lot less, 8 times, while trying to concentrate on the 20-40 yard throws. Again at 65-75% pass defense.
Glenn went 29 of 43 for 339 with 2 picks. 19 for 27 under 20 yards, 10 of 15 from 20-40 and 0-1 over 40 yards. They ran 12 times for 42 yards. Again I my defense did not key-in a single time while giving up 21 points.
Now Glenn is a good QB, he´s not A Brady or Manning, but he can play. The receivers, other than Ramon Chicken (great name) a RB playing WR, are pretty pedestrian, though I have to say they certainly broke a lot of tackles against me.
My defense, which leads the league in points against, is a group of decent but not great players and clearly lacks any standout guys. Its a defense you'd expect would give up some points so holding that offense to 51 in two games is actually not bad. We won the second game but that had just as much to do with our offense playing better and controlling the ball longer and not the defensive adjustments. Hell we could have won the first game with another break or two, but thats just luck and it shouldn't be about that either. It should be about talent and planning.
We defended 91 throws over two games (all from shotgun) and while we got 3 picks we only broke-up two passes and never keyed-in once against a pass. In fact, Miami did key-in twice against us in game 2, even though we ran 37 times and threw just 23 times. Both of those key-ins went for completions, 1 for a TD, so thats not working either.
Again, I´m not saying these games cant play out they way they did, they absolutely can. What I am saying is they play out way more often than they should and that designing a defense to stop them is basically impossible, even against (to your credit, Casper) good but not great talent. Defenses who try to blitz on every play get killed by owners that know what they are doing. But the same does not apply to one dimensional offenses right now. I think if we release these new offensive enhancements, without supplying the defense to additional tools, we are going back to where we were 3 years ago. Dont get me wrong, that was fun, but its not realistic.

That's some really good analysis. I was too lazy to review the results of the offense I'd implemented. And yeah, Ramon Chicken- that is awesome and he's a great player too. Bottom line, in my mind, is that even though you knew what was coming and had a good defense at your disposal, there was no keying-in. I'd say you're right- we'll definitely want to get some help on the defensive side of the ball to help balance things out. I'm not even sure that the 3-4 option will have a dramatic effect- guess we'll have to see when it's rolled out here in the test leagues...

I wanted that Chicken guy in the draft, he´s a good player. But its the other guy who's killing it, (Greek) Art Tsoutsouvas. He´s a good jumper, I think that makes a difference.
I am actually all for that Run and gun, the wildcat too..... but the defense just doesn't stand a chance. The other day we played a game, I think in Zeta where you were up by 10 and I scored with like 1:30 on the clock. You covered the onside kick at my 30 yard line but I had all my timeouts. You came out in I or Pro Set after starting in Shotgun all day, and what does my defense do? Of course, it comes out in Nickel. 9 yard run on first down, game over.
That play can be controlled in ADVANCED OPTIONS and I didnt have it set, my fault all the way. But in that situation (and I did have a Run Cover in the normal play set) the defense has to know thats a run situation and at the very least cannot come out in Nickel when you are not in Shotgun. Truthfully, if you threw there that would be gutsy and would have been surprising. The run there should not have been.
Im sure its not easy to program, but the defense just needs to be little more intuitive.

see, and I hate those guys. too many picks for my taste. I've always preferred aikman or manning to favre though.

Never been a Colts or Broncos fan but I've got a lot of respect for Manning. He's like having an offensive coordinator under center. He can just look at the defense and know what's coming. It's like playing chess against a chess master.

You should see the guy he has in the FHFL, one of those super high execution guys with really low AGR. That thing doesn't feel pressure from a blitz and kills you deep or if you're sitting in a deep zone it finds the guy open in the 8-10 yard range.

I have played with all sorts of combos of EXE and AGR and I swear the guys with B/B splits seem to play amazing, even if they have just ok to pretty good throwing skills. I've had 2 of those guys and they seem to put up really high YPA and throw very few Int's or take many sacks.

i'm finding I like the EXE to be about one grade higher than the AGG. that seems to keep things in check ok. even still, when I have a really high AGG QB (which isn't that often anymore) I still find I have to dial him back a bit by reducing the number of deep patterns I call. on the other hand, I also find I have to really crank up the long passes if I have a really low AGG guy, just to make him throw it more than 5 yards.

I'm with you on that one. When I have one of those high exec low agr guys it seems like it once or twice a season they refuse to throw the ball down the field at all. It's extra frustrating when it happens in a game that my rushing attack is getting stuffed.

You should always be loooking for as high EXE as possible. As far as AGG, for QB's I think B or B+ is probably best, above that they throw in traffic too much and start getting more incompletes and interceptions. Low AGG QB's will have the highest completion and lowest interception rates but will check down a lot and are best for short-passing offenses where AGG isn't an issue.
